My only real thought on this is that it's not as "clear" as either side is trying to make it sound, which I think is backed up by the debate here and nationally over the play. I also don't know shit about the rules of baseball, written or not, so I can't really say one way or the other.

The slide can be interpreted a few ways I guess.

The suspension can't. It's dirty and wrong.

If you intentionally throw at a batter, charge the mound, bump an umpire, throw a punch, bang on the opponents clubhouse door, etc you know you'll likely face a suspension.

There is literally not one instance I can think of a slide earning a suspension.

No one was suspended for beating a woman in an elevator before either before this season. Does that mean that beating a woman into unconsciousness in an elevator shouldn't result in a suspension?

I honestly don't care whether it was "dirty". I, like favrefan, don't really understand the rule, and would like to know if it was legal.

And the suspension doesn't mean shit now. That's of little consequence to the Mets who lost the game because of the play. If it was illegal, it should have been addressed during the game.

The rule should be you can slide as hard or late as you want as long as your leading hand or foot is in line to get to the base

The sliding 2-3 feet to the right is ridiculous

It was a dick play but the rule is very flimsy and I cant blame a guy for testing the limits

I don't have a strong opinion about the slide's cleanliness. I think it's dirty but technically not illegal. But if my interpretation is wrong and it's illegal I won't argue.

I do care about MLB handing a 2-game suspension because a guy broke his leg and New York media/fans cried.

No it's always been illegal but never been enforced. When Albert Belle gave a flying forearm to Fernando Viña's chest/neck/head in the middle of the basepath nothing happened.

Absolutely dirty and should have resulted in an immediate double play call. Suspension is warranted due to the injury caused.

Dirty play..but If Tejada doesn't get hurt its not an issue and nobody is talking about it. You can't levy a suspension just because someone got injured.

Where was the outcry here? No suspension. Coghlan is further from the bag.

Baserunners are taught to disrupt the turn no matter what. This is why every former position player has backed Utley. Utley isnt the problem...MLB / the system is.

Coghlan is actually reaching for the bag, Utley did not. Coghlan is sliding what looks to be like at least 3-4' BEFORE the bag. Utley did not.

There are many instances where the actual game of baseball isn't played or called in accordance with the written rules. We can start with the strikezone.

It seems like some guys in this thread are talking about the way things should be rather than they way they have always been. And there's no problem with that. spanky's point about replay's effect on the neighborhood play is well taken. If a runner isn't allowed to crush an infielder the neighborhood play is unnecessary.

My issue is the sudden and arbitrary enforcement in a crucial situation. It's reminiscent of Merkle's "boner".

No, but it should be. You could then eliminate the neighborhood rule and stop having people break their fucking legs unnecessarily. I've never been a fan of trying to kill the shortstop on double plays. If you can't drill catchers, you shouldn't drill a guy with no gear who is trying to make an athletic play.
