I think MLB is banking on the fact that the Cubs and Cardinals have huge portions of their fanbase who are unemployed.

The day games on weekdays make zero sense. Marker your product, MLB. Southerners probably aren't watching an LA-NY matchup anyway, but they're definitely not watching it while Maury Povich is on.

There probably is an argument for running games opposite each other in prime time. There are many fans of particular teams who have minimal interest in the other game(s). But MLB is foolishly misunderstanding its audience and attempting to emulate the NFL. The football fan will watch a designated TV game for reasons that do not exist with baseball, i.e. fantasy players, gambling.

Yeah, really, world's not gonna end if the Cubs and Blue Jays are playing at the same time.

Conversely, I wish Saturday afternoons just had one national game of the week, the way God intended, but even that "regional coverage" is another attempt to emulate the NFL.

Without any actual data, I would have to think so. Even if you're splitting viewers with simultaneous night games, you would think the number of potential viewers at night is five times higher, anyway. Plus you're probably pissing off local fans.

The New York angle is overplayed. The Mets are like the White Sox, a distant second in a two team town.

a "town" with an urban population about 3X greater than Chicago and a regional population that is probably even more dominating

The Mets are worth roughly the same as the Cubs, and that is with gross mismanagement that even Ricketts/Tribune couldn't match.

Regarding the rivalry stuff...MLB Network has billed Cubs / Cardinals as equal to Boston / New York of the early 2000's. That this series is the introduction to a rivalry that will dominate baseball over the next decade.

I think nationally...this rivalry will seem bigger than it actually is.

...and the Big Ten Network calls the Purdue-IU rivalry a great one too every year as they show it on BTN++.

The main difference being that in New York the more successful team on the field is the popular one.

Your analogy would work if I had said "NL Central Network"

Which I would subscribe to had I the option.

I'm not sure it makes much of a difference, but by number of teams the conference is basically equal to the NL.

The point is that MLB network is going to pump up just about any rivalry.

I just got done riding fifteen miles on my bike. If the wind is blowing like it is now during the game, I'd bet a lot of money that at least one of those guys will hit a home run. But it's probably not the best scenario for Arrieta either. His advantage decreases significantly if this is one of those crazy Wrigley games with balls flaying all over the place.

Did you run into Arrieta on his bike?

5pm start is a factor if the sun is out. If it's cloudy, it won't matter obviously.

But I think the advantage goes to the Cardinals if there are shadows. Nobody can hit Arietta with shadows or without them. But the Cubs hitters will be bothered by them so it makes their pitcher more equal to Arrieta.

Sun doesn't go down until like 6:30. So that's half the game.
