This guy has been a second half disappointment. I'm hoping he settles down and gives the Cubs a strong 6 inning performance.

Cards had Jake very well scouted tonight. Did a good job of not swing at those outside and low sliders.

I think that took some heavy teaching and banging it into some goods heads to hold off on those pitches.

Jake made some great pitches too. Guessing very rare for Jake to throw back to back 95 MPH fastballs, as he did a few times tonight.

Great chess game tonight.

Oh, and guess what THATS CALLED COACHING.

So tonight Metheny and Maddon were great managers. I'm sure all you geniuses will let us know quite soon that at least one of them no longer is.

I guess great managers can't possibly ever lose.

The Cardinals didn't do anything apecial to Arrieta. He had conttol problems and hung a breaking ball that led to a bomb. It happens.

I doubt his last 12 opponents just couldn't figure out they needed to lay off his slider.

I predict.....

We'll see either Rodney and or Grimm tomorrow. Might be some rust there, including Hammel.

jake throws 97 pitches for 5.2 innings, if you think that just happened by chance. OK.

Hammel gives you what, 5 to 6 at best? Wood has thrown a lot and Richard seems to have settled into that LOOGY role as of late, so someone is going to have pick up those innings.

We got the positive contribution from Strop tonight. Let's not press our luck two days in a row.

You honestly think Arrieta had a bad night because the Cardinals "scouted" him better than all the other teams?

He had an off night, and the Cardinals happened to capitalize on a couple of his mistakes.

He's human. It was bound to happen at some point.

Yes, I think the Cards made a focused effort to lay off his slider out of the zone, Thus the 97 pitches.

If Jake just had a bad night, he would have been rocked for more than 5 Hits...and he had 9 K's in 5 innings....you dont have 9 K's in an off night, esepcially in 5 innings.

I dont know whay its so hard to give credit to another team that did something pretty well.

Lotsa pitchers used on both sides tonight.

Will be interesting tomorrow. I know some of the Cubs didnt throw many actual game pitches, but they got up a few times to get hot.

Strop was up 3 times before he got in....

I'll give the Cardinals credit because they're a good, disciplined team that capitalized on Arrieta's mistakes. They almost always are disciplined. In fact, I think they're the best organization in professional sports. I just don't believe that they made some executive decision to lay off Arrieta's slider and that no other team could figure that out.

I said on this very board numerous times that Arrieta's streak of dominance would end tonight.

It's semantics, anyway. Arrieta looked human. He will bounce back.

They are overdue to rake that fucking trap jaw Lackey into oblivion. If Hammel can get thru 5 without totally shitting the bed I think they'll be ok.

Like our chances, Richard pitched to one batter..he's ready to go 4-5 innings if need be.

guess we were at different games. Arrietta hit the back stop with a pitch, bounced one on the grass in front of home plate and hit a guy in the foot with a pitch. He had little control and that was evident from the second inning on.

JORR disagrees with you. He said Arrietta was the same as he has been all second half.

Not saying he had his best stuff, but once again...97 pitches over 5.2 innings. I guess the guy who recorded that was at another game as well. While striking out 9.

Post-game presser madden said from the start he knew arrieta was off, but that it was bound to happen sooner or later. "being perfect every time is just not going to happen." He still praised him for gutting it out and getting the game to the bullpen with the lead.

Wouldn't the strikeouts indicate that they WERE chasing those pitches?

Those pitches yet, but 97 pitches over 5 innings is the dominant stat here.

Wildcard game 113 Pitches over 9 inning
72 and 84 pitches in the previous 2 games, in 6 and 7 innings.

If you think he was just wild and thus through 97 pitches in 5 innings, then he just must have got lucky on the 9 Ks'??? because he was wild?

I think it's deceiving when you're pitching in conditions like that. If he gets to pitch again and he dominates, I'm gonna take that as evidence I was correct in my assessment.

They were swinging at balls out of the strike zone, which is really the goal for a pitcher.

Sitting in the bleachers...it was hard for me to judge Arrieta's stuff. But I did comment to my buddy and folks near me that the Cardinals were laying off low fastballs and sliders from Arrieta. Obviously the ones in the dirt...but even good low pitches. I would guess it was an actual game plan the Cardinals had. At worst...Arrieta would still be dominate but would have a higher pitch count.

I DVR'd the game...after today's win I may watch it to see what was seen on the telecast.

THIS...wind blowing out of RF certainly made a big difference. Arietta was good...not his absolute best, but good. Cardinals DID scout him well and it showed based on the number of pitches thrown. He may not have been perfect but given equal weather conditions he was superior to the Cardinals SP.

Will Hammel shut down the Cards?
No....the Cubs will need to win the offensive battle to seal this series shut.

I do like a veteran in this position...Cubs up 2-1 in the series...at home....clinching game. I don't think Hammel will be a world beater...he doesn't need to be. But 6 IP 2 ER would be alright...and the Cubs' bats carry over from yesterday.
