I am bored and done with Cubs talk so...

My son and I were driving home last evening after his football game. We were talking about his play and other parts of football in general. He watches a ton of old you tube videos of classic players for entertainment and maybe to catch some hints to improve or emulate etc. He loves Payton and when he brought him up he asked if he would fit in today or something like that. I said sure but you know age or other things affect those discussions.

So he lays the question on me what all time Bear is my favorite. Also do you think they could play at their same great level today if you made all players over time the same age and equalize some other variables. I said Payton would immediately.

So I ask you guys and Spaulding which all-time Bear immediately pops in your head when you are asked your favorite? No debating or thinking long about it. The first thought. And could they play today as I described above?

Payton would fit in even better in today's NFL.

My favorite Bear is Hampton. I see no reason why he couldn't fit in today's NFL.

Wilber Marshall I think would be fine.

Julius Peppers' first year here--maybe first two--was about as good as anyone has played for them in my lifetime. He would have been the best player on the 85 team.

Sadly I'm not young. People have already forgotten how great he was, in 2010 in particular--in light of his "losing interest" in later years. The guy was everywhere, running RBs down from behind 25 yards downfield. Drawing double-teams every play. He single-handedly extended Urlacher's career, which Urlacher would probably admit. He wasn't a media darling though and kept a low profile. I thought he was the best player at any position that year, any position. I love me some Hamp, even on radio, but I don't think he ever had a single year like Peppers had.

He had a real good year, no doubt about it. But to say he would be the best player on the 85 team is just silly. He was arguably not even the best player on the 2010 team.

A young Brian Urlacher might have been the most impressive athlete I've seen on a football field. He did it all, and his speed wasn't just 40 time speed. He was just as fast in pads. He took a lot of shit in his later years that made people forget how phenomenal he was for his first 6 or 7 years. Mike Vick feared him.

I honestly think that. McMichael, Fridge and to a lesser extent, Dent, weren't even in his category as an all-around DL.

Ok, I can go with you on McMichael and Fridge. No way was Peppers better than Dent.

Agreed. I remember an interception he had his rookie year and he must have jumped 3 feet in the air to grab it. But even Urlacher famously said that Peppers was the best football player he had ever seen.

Pro Football reference has him rated the 30th best player of all time, any position. And he's still playing at a Pro-Bowlish-level. The only Bear higher is Payton.

Waddle would be able to get his skull cracked as easily as he did a couple decades ago. Although I would take him off punt returns for sure.

The easy answer is and always will be #34. Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers, and Barry Sanders may have been better pure Running Backs....Payton IMO will always be the best all-around football player. He did everything on the field.

In recent years, I was always very fond of Tillman. He was a smart player which allowed him a few extra years as he grew older.

Devin Hester should have a stronger legacy, but the team really ruined him by trying to make him a WR. His returns were the biggest reason that 2006 team went to the Super Bowl. Yes...the defense was very good, but Hester scored or put the offense at mid-field on almost every return. I wish they would have let some other team overpay him as a WR and roll the dice.

Other fav would be Alan Page. As a yoot I had the honor of attending his last home game..."A Page in History"

I don't get intimidated by other men too often but I once stood next to Robocop James Thornton and he scared me. That dude had muscles on his muscles. He seemed very nice though and took a picture with my son.
