It was a good recap of the two months between last season and the premiere. I would suspect that we may see a similar type episode
about their new neighbors as well that might help us understand the father with a quick temper. It has been very watchable which was
my concern going into this season. I thought they were going to go off the rails early and I might hate it.

It looks like the Guilty Remnant is coming to Jarden.

Got me invested in a whole new set of characters before ever introducing familiar faces.

Will Evie and friends now be "departed"? And will the arrivals of Matt and Kevin be blamed?

I might be confused, but I don't see how that would work. Is there going to be another Departure? Isn't this the present tense?

Watched the first episode last night. First 5-10 minutes were awful television, the rest was awesome. I expect a very good season.

I mean will their disappearance be considered a departure by the people of Miracle.

I think they probably got swallowed up by telephone earthquake.

They faked the Departure for some reason

A good, not great episode, IMO. I really don't like the Patti hallucinating scenes, although I understand it's used to demonstrate his craziness. Any scene with Nora is awesome, best character on the show by far.

Regarding the end, I didn't even consider it was a suicide attempt until I read a review. I assumed someone was trying to kill him, but the suicide thing makes more sense considering he hasnt been there long enough to make enemies and he dug up Patti to try to escape this new family as well.

I want more scenes with Tommy and Lauri.

WTF was that ending? I thought these episodes have been fantastic.

They actually made a couple jokes! The confession scene was great. The "...and I smoke" was just perfect.

Plus, I can just watch Carrie Coon for an hour and be satisfied. Plus plus, I feel creepy as a guy who was a big Andie MacDowell fan as a younger man to think her daughter might be better looking (she's almost 20, I'm good).

I'm also enjoying the new opening credits much more. It's gut-wrenching to watch.

Lastly, I'm surprised that they are even somewhat addressing why this all might have occurred. I didn't think they would but I find that stuff fascinating - along with the consequences like the adoption center. Great stuff.

I loved the casual "Why wouldn't it?" from the MIT dude.

I think i watch too many shows. I saw this thread and had no recollection of this show. Even read what it was about and thought it sounded like a cool concept and wondered how I could miss the first season. Seemed right up my ally. Decided to watch season 1 ondemand, turned it on and realized that I had in fact seen the first season and liked it a lot, yet a year later I have no recall of ever having seen it.

Watched the first 2 episodes. REally like that they changed locations instead of making this yet another show about a small town where weird shit happened. Didn't care much for ep 2, it seemed like almost a recap of the previous episode.

Not liking the season starting with Episode 2, then going back to Episode 1, now on to Episode 4???? and we wait for Sunday Night Ep. 3?

PLOT

One day, 2% of the Worlds Population vanished. No rhyme or reason, no puff of smoke, just gone, which they call "Sudden Departure". Its about those people dealing with the pain of family members vanishing. Then you have a group of severe nut jobs called the "Guilty Remnant" who dont speak, smoke cigs all day and night, live together and where all white, while the harass the people who are trying to get on with life.

While many will say "This represents that" there is no definitive records of what it all means, which I am sure is what they wanted when they made the shows.

Lotsa freaky thoughts and crazy people, doing crazy shit....which could easily be the summary of the show by itself.

I don't necessarily disagree but it still begs the question "what does it mean"?

I read an article where the writer's room was trying to determine "what should we put on the 'previously on'" and decided "why not go real far back."

An interesting take that I heard was what if the pregnant woman was supposed to die in the cave but didn't. God eventually caught up with that but then the baby shouldn't have been born. So, the descendents of that child eventually had to pay the piper as it were and they were all taken.

Pretty far-fetched - why would God wait so long to even the scales - but I thought it was kind of interesting.

Maybe god waited so long cause it wasn't until he saw Final Destination in the theaters that he realized he could do shit like that?

Also you mention the descendents of the child paying the price, who are you talking about? Are you saying every person who departed was related to that baby? That wouldn't make sense since that would mean that a parent and children would go and as we saw that didn't happen to anyone except Nora.

Not the greatest episode but they had to move the storyline along with the mother and son so we knew what they were up to. The ending
had me scratching my head quite a bit, I wasn't sure if he was being truthful or just feeding these folks a line of bullshit. The scene with
Liv Tyler was definitely a strange one.

What do you think about the son's claim that he has Crazy Wayne's powers?

I didnt even consider he was lying, but maybe he is.

His mom's storyline was great though.

You didnt even consider he was lieing? LOL

I fully think he was....it was right after he and his mom agreed "Lets give them something"...or else you are telling me he knew he had this alleged power and never used it watching all these people go through pain.

The kid probably becomes powerful, have to take that faction to this next step, cant have them being pushed around in the basement for the rest of the season. Makes bad TV.

The whole son becoming Holy Wayne thing seems way too convenient. Its either a lie or a pretty half assed writing/revisionist history effort. Maybe Holy Wayne wouldn't sign on for season 2 so they had to come up with something like this on the fly?

I believe it's a lie. We did get to see Wayne dying and Tommy taking the baby. His story doesn't match up unless something happened off screen. It is interesting to note that he refused to hug his sister in the diner though.

Oh, I didn't remember Wayne dying. In light of that and him not hugging his sister I don't believe he's lying.

EDIT: ITs not really a lie you can get away with. The first time you hug someone they are going to know you are lying so considering he just offered everyone in the room a hug I'm thinking he can really heal people.

Also interesting that he wouldn't have been able to hug Liv Tyler when she raped him since he was handcuffed.

Season 2, Episode 3, ‘Off Ramp’

If anyone was concerned that Season 2 of “The Leftovers” hasn’t been sad enough, this week’s episode, “Off Ramp,” puts those worries to rest. It is an elegantly directed, heartbreaking hour that showcases an emotionally nuanced performance from Amy Brenneman and, once again, illustrates the uphill climb involved in making fresh starts. It’s also a study in why people become believers, whether they place their faith in the Guilty Remnant or a 20-something who inherited the power to heal with free hugs.

In last week’s episode, Kevin Garvey aimed to make a fresh start by going to Miracle. In “Off Ramp,” Laurie Garvey tries to makes a fresh start by becoming a miracle worker. She has basically founded her own religion — let’s call it the Anti-Remnant. It involves persuading former devotees of the Cult of Chain Smoking to return to the outside world and rebuild their lives, and also exposing the Guilty Remnant’s horrible practices via a memoir. Laurie’s on a mission, as the insistent “Whiplash”-esque drumbeat that underscores her constant typing and weirdly satisfying recovery of her laptop makes clear. The problem is that mission is based on revenge.

On one hand Laurie wants to mow down the G.R., and does just that by running over two of its members with her car. But she also can’t erase the fact that she still feels connected to its cause, so much that she comes to its defense during that meeting at the publishing house. The G.R., and the things it made her do, are the smudge on her windshield that won’t go away, no matter how hard she rubs.

In the episode’s climax, when that publishing executive recounts how Laurie led her own daughter directly into a burning house — “She’s in there because of you” — Laurie finally snaps. She’s uncomfortable taking responsibility for her own sins and being associated with the G.R.’s behavior, but equally uncomfortable acting like everything its members do is crazy. (By the way, Laurie definitely should not have attacked that guy, but I think we can all agree that anyone who suggests “Let Me Just Put This on Silent” as a book title deserves at least a light slap.)

Laurie’s story, along with Susan’s — the ex-Remnant member leaves one life of muteness for another and, in a move that mirrors Laurie’s vehicular recklessness, steers her car into an oncoming truck — proves that merely insisting that everything can go back to normal does not make it so. People need more than normal, and they need more than revenge to motivate them. Tommy may be infiltrating the G.R. solely as a recruiter, but even he understands why its clear, if misguided, doctrine appeals to people.

“They’re giving them something,” he tells his mom. “We can strip it away, but once it’s gone, we have nothing to put back in its place.”

“Well,” Laurie responds, “let’s give them something.”

So they do. Laurie tells her patients a story that’s true, about Patti, the Departure and her fractured relationship with Jill. Then Tommy tells the group a story that’s mostly a lie. Yes, Tommy believed in Holy Wayne, and, yes, Tommy was left alone with Christine and Wayne’s baby. But when Tommy cried out for help with a wailing infant in his arms, Holy Wayne didn’t suddenly appear the way he describes. No one did.

Tommy changes the real story to a version in which he becomes the recipient of Wayne’s therapeutic gifts. As a result, Laurie and Tommy do give their followers something: spiritual comfort, even though it’s based on falsehood.

One can watch that closing scene cynically or through a more sympathetic lens. Tommy’s story suggests that faith — any faith — is really nothing more than choosing to believe some cockamamie story someone made up. But he tells it with so much sincerity, and everyone in the room is so clearly inspired, that there’s something genuinely uplifting there. Maybe there’s something of value in the fib.

“The Leftovers” may be the only show on TV right now that consistently does what it does in that moment: invites us to question belief systems while acknowledging their genuine power and beauty at the same time.

I’m not sure if “The Leftovers,” the TV show, has its own belief system. But there’s certainly a tendency toward the humanistic, in this episode and in the series as a whole. People have value and are linked to one another in ways they can’t even grasp. The Garvey family, for example, is bisected at the moment, but so much in “Off Ramp” — the repeat of the Tommy-Jill meeting from Laurie’s perspective, and the way Kevin’s and Laurie’s habits mirror each other’s (they do love their loud music) — points to how these people are still connected. Even the part of the story that Tommy omits — it was really his father and sister who helped him with that baby— speaks to that. We can see all that. The sad thing is, the Garveys can’t.

Leftover Notes

• Meet the new Patti of the Guilty Remnant. It’s Meg, and her first order of business is to sex-punish Tommy, then threaten to set him on fire for infiltrating the group. That whole surreal steamy incident raises the question: Is Meg trying to get pregnant with Tommy Garvey’s baby so she can tether Laurie forever to the Guilty Remnant?

• During this episode, we briefly hear a news report about a resurrection in (where else?) Australia that involved a man, previously believed dead, emerging from a cave outside of Perth. The publishing executive refers to it again when he mentions the “wing nut in Australia who says he went to the other side and can’t die.” Caves and mystical events — that certainly seems connected to Miracle. Also: I wouldn’t be surprised if the resurrected “wing nut” turns out to be Holy Wayne.

Regarding that last paragraph, Kevin's dad said he was going to Australia also.

I assumed Tommy was lying the whole time. Itll be interesting to see what happens later with that.

The hug could be a placebo though. There's the possibility that Wayne himself was a fraud. He hugged Nora and I'm not sure if it really "healed" her or not.
