It didn't look like a hammy, I think he just knocked the wind out of him self. Maddon is feeding the media bullshit. He's fine and starts game 4.

Russell to have MRI Tuesday on "tight" hamstring, status uncertain

if Javy Baez takes his place today, I have a feeling he is going to get a big hit. He should have had 2 hits yesterday, but for Castro getting hit by one of them. Needs to play a good SS too though. I think he will. Don't want to use Russell if the hammy is not right.

I think Maddon will use the Russell injury as an excuse to put Baez in at short. If he needs one that is. The guy came out of the game....that tells you something,...so you give him a rest & play the other guy. The other guy has some talent too.

Doubtful for today. Per sources, named Joe.

That did count as a hit for him.

Do the Cubs go back to Russell, or do the Cubs ride the hot bat and keep Javy in?

I would keep Javy in for now and use the excuse of letting Russell rest his hamstring. Russell, save for that triple, seemed to be struggling at the plate. I assume the two errors Javy made were due to nerves, and that the Cubs will not lose anything defensively with Javy at shortstop.

That feeling about Javy getting a big hit turned out to be right on the money. He did have a good night in the field too. HUGE game for the much maligned youngster. He's cut down on the strikeouts and shown he may well be a piece of the puzzle after all. I see Bryant moving to the outfield next year, so Baez can take over 3rd full time.

Russell is the SS. If he is good to go, he's back out there. That said, they can move Bryant to the outfield and play Javy at 3rd. But that would mean sitting Schwarber or Soler, who are both hot hitters right now. So if Addy's hammy is not 100%, not 99% , but truly 100%, maybe we will see Baez back there. Good problems that they have so many guys hitting well right now.

Gordon said this morning he'd be surprised if Russell is ready for start of NLCS.

Nice to have some depth at the position. Baez has decidedly more power and a better arm, but is not as steady on routine plays. But if he can keep avoid the strikeouts (he has shown a great improvement on that this season) he might be a great contributor in the NLCS. Sure was instrumental in helping them get there.

ehhhhhhh i think it very well could be a blessing in disguise that you're going to have baez give some run, cuz if he ends up providing cromulent defense at SS (he's better than castro but lesser than "addy" right?) i think establishing his stick in the lineup with everyday at bats has more value because he's way more likely to, say, hit a big 2-3R HR to swing the score of a game in your favor (see: game 4) than is addison russell.

that said, of course with the prospect of facing greinke/kershaw for 4/7 games or facing degrom/syndergaard/harvey/matz throughout 7 games (cuz matz was like 5IP 3ER, but those 3ER game in a bunch and i bet you he can do 6-7IP 2ER-or-less if given another start) yeah having a + defensive SS out there is obviously going to help your pitching staff, especially if you're starting someone with a last name starting with H (hammel/haren/hendricks, cuz with hendricks i'm not 100.0% certain he's a lock to be 6-7IP 3ER-OR-LESS yet) then yeah if you're not having a "sure thing" like arrieta or lester then you might want to have the best DEF possible behind him, but i'm thinking that right now the upside of baez's bat > the difference betwen baez and a not-100%-addison-russell at SS, especially coming off of a game 4 where i'd argue that baez won you that game by hitting that huge HR when he did.

I agree, that hit swung that game around. he swung the bat well in the game before as well. He had a single and would have had another single going to RF to put men on 1st and 3rd with just 1 out, but Castro couldn't avoid getting hit by the ground ball. Had another single in the clincher after the homer too. Like Soler, he had a hot bat in that series. I hope it continues.
