what's sad abut hendry is if you look at pictures of him b4 and after the GM gig you can see that the job literally withered him. dude put on weight and aged really badly when he was GM, so say what you want about the guy (bidding against himself to overpay soriano by 30-50mil or whatever) but at least he seemingly really gave a shit about the job.

No doubt he cared. Not even questioned it.

But he didnt have the information to evaluate the players like they do today and even if he had it, he wouldnt know what to do with it

He played from his gut. It just doesnt work today. Can an old veteran give you a Gaetti month, sure, but in the long run you are going to lose trying to squeeze the last drops of toothpaste out of Griff Jr, Manny and McGriff.

Havent seen this guy in 20+ years. Might have attended a first Cubs game with him at Age 11, sits behind us last night and today gets the TV shot. Just kinda cool. I am sure you will all agree. :D

Hendry always came across as a genuine guy. I think most can agree, he worked under what appeared to be the most-dysfunctional org structure as possible. it's hard to understand what was his doing and what was pushed down to him based on the sale of the cubs and Tribune co. That being said, 3 blemishes on his resume
1) At the end there were just of bad contracts on the books. No trade clauses out the ass.
2) Alfonso Soriano's contract was insane and looked like a Yankees / A-Rod deal where they were simply bidding against themselves
3) Milton Bradley. This was a bad idea and his press conference where he told everyone about their dinner and him saying at the end "I want to be a Cub" was enough to make anyone barf. He was a bad guy. it was a stupid contract.

He did do some good things, though and as I said earlier, he always came across as a decent, genuine person.

Rizzo said it last night at the post game presser. When he got here, the Cub were "30 to 40 years behind technology wise."

Of course that's hyperbole, but our front office was one of the last dinosaurs out there no doubt. I don't think most fans realize how much of a mess Theo inherited.

A mess is when you have info and its in boxes, all needs to be entered into a computer.

When Theo got here, there was no data team, there was probably 1 computer with a seperate hard drive, that resided in Hendrys drawer , next to the Jim beam bottle.
