Jesse doing work on Chicago Tonight this evening. Cubbing it up with Phil Ponce. Looked clean, sober and professional for his appearance. I remember seeing Spiegs on a few times and he look liked he had just emerged from a Scooby Doo convention where he cosplayed as an obese Shaggy.

Well, he said that after three minutes of platitudes for Jesse, but ended by saying that of all the students in broadcasting he had prepared, he "didn't see Jesse coming".

Jesse owes Mike North his life.

Jesse is really not a smart guy. Spent some time with him in my early days when "Slumlord" worked the airways.

However, he works hard and I think his stupidity is endearing to those who spend time around him, thus he does get access to athletes or they enjoy hanging with someone on their level.

Jesse's ability to land top guests for North to mow down, (SEE Mike McCaskey and Isiah Thomas) put North, and the Score on the map.

North will forever owe more to Jesse, then Jesse does to him. And North is well aware of that.

There was a time when the Score lineup was North, M&H, Murph, B&B, and then Doug/Hub or Larry or DePaul/NIU/Hawks. Weekends were Baum and Olken, Paruch, Jesse, and various play-by-play. It was when Bernstein was his best because the whole fucking station wasn't trying to be like him.

Remember Jesse's Sunday Morning Breakfast Grill (or whatever he called it)? He would ask a callers what they wanted for breakfast and if they said bacon or sausage, he'd play a sizzling sound like he was fryin' up their breakfast for 'em.

Someone faxed his show one morning, just as it was starting, using the name Lillian Hellman and told him that he sucked. He got all bent out of shape and started ranting and raving "The show has barely even started, Lillian, and you're saying it sucks? That I suck? Why don't you give it a fair chance before saying it sucks?"

I always wondered if it was Bernstein screwing with him.

This weirdly reminded me of a segment on Hood or T-Dub's show called The Barbershop (or something like that) back in the 1160 days of the Score. Three or four callers would be on at once and talk sports. The producer would even put in clipper and buzzer as background noise.

Interesting concept but it immediately devolved into chaos with everyone trying to talk over each other.

Sounds like the original Sportswriters with Ben Bentley attempting to "moderate".

After McNeil, Jesse is second in the category of "most likeable/approachable" from a listener standpoint. Jesse would say things on the air and later when reminded of what he said he would almost blush. He would sometimes try to re-direct to what he meant to say but wouldn't run away from what he had actually said (like asking if a player with six fingers was born that way). I've caught a few glimpses of him on TV recently and he's no worse than many others who've stood in front of a camera.

Actually, I'd say Silverman is.

Silvy is right up there on the likability scale. Anyone that subjects themselves to as many board outings as that guy has, must be a good guy.
