How are the Mets a "tortured" suffering fanbase?

I literally have no idea why they're described as such.

The Mets fans are the White Sox fans of New York.

Their last title was in 1986. It's been a long wait for another one!

The Mets are the New York equivalent of the White Sox in Chicago. Both are red haired step children with a small fraction of the fan base that the Yankees & Cubs have.

That's not really a good parallel though. In Chicago the team that has been more successful is the stepchild. The Cubs and Sox both have traditional fanbases with loyalty being handed down in families. The Mets fan, by nature, is someone who consciously refused to root for the Yankees. It may have been NL guys who were left without a team when the Dodgers and Giants went west. Those people were never going to root for the Yankees. And then there were those "hipsters" who found fashion in rooting for the worst team in baseball during those early seasons. It was a cool thing to root for the 120 game losers in New York for awhile. Then when they won in '69 and the Yankees were down for the first time in forever, it was awesome.

The sad part is that if you start from when the Mets started, the Cubs and Sox combined have about as much success as the Mets, if the Cubs win the World Series this year.

defined, no.

it's ridiculous to say a team that's played in a WS in 2000 and last won one in '86 has a long-suffering fanbase.

As I mentioned in another thread, I was flirting with being a Cub fan as a little kid. My dad was doing everything he could to prevent that. My old man was a pretty hardcore baseball fan. Back then you had to read The Sporting News to follow young players. It's not like now where a quick search will give you a million photos of Kris Bryant and his girlfriend. Seaver and Koosman weren't quite household names in early 1969. But my dad would have known that these guys were an up and coming pitching staff. That's probably why he bought me the Mets cap. I'd guess he figured they were the best shot to beat the Cubs.

Anyway, we went to a Mets game that summer. Looking at the schedule, my best guess is that it was the July 16 game where Cardwell and Jenkins both got knocked out in the second inning. I say that because my dad was a banker and we usually went to games on Wednesday. After the game we were at The Sports Corner and I was wearing my Mets cap. An old guy (Old? What the fuck did I know from old? I was five. Everybody was old.) walked over to us and said he was from New York. He wasn't wearing a Mets cap or shirt or anything. Adults didn't really do that back then. But he started talking about the Mets with my dad and then he pulled his wallet out and handed me a dollar bill. It had writing around the border that said "1969 Lucky Mets Dollar, Keep Me". I've had the thing for 46 years. I was going to post a picture of it here. I looked for it today though and I couldn't find it. Maybe that's a good omen for the Cubs.

I like the way the Mets are constructed. Great pitching usually beats great hitting. The Cubs may well have the best pitcher in Arrieta. But I'll take deGrom and Thor over Lester. Their #3 and #4 starters..... hell their #5 and #6 (if you count Colon) would be guys I might take over Hendricks and Hammel. I like the Cubs offense a hell of a lot better, but with Vinny Castilla, Larry Walker, Andres Gallarraga and Todd Walker, the Rockies had a nice offensive club, but never could win anything. Luckily, the Cubs have a good and deep bullpen and Maddon uses it well. Lester getting the Cubs off to a positive start in the series would be great. Arrieta could then make it 2-0 and put a hell of a lot of pressure on the Mets at that point. Got tickets for games 3 and 5, so I am hoping the Cubs win in 5. While a sweep would be great, I would be fine with NY winning 1 game, just so I can be there for another clincher.

Something has to give. I think cooler weather should lower the homer numbers?

When they first began talking about reconstructing Wrigley Field, I said they should build a new ballpark altogether, with a retractable roof. That would be a hell of a lot better for cold days in both early spring and the playoffs. I know....landmark status....which is why they should have gone to Rosemont. I love Wrigley, but not cold weather. Hitters generally don't either.

They can manufacture runs if they need to.

They did that in the game with back to back safety squeeze bunts (which was aided by a couple errors). But they were one of the worst teams at getting runners in from 3rd with less than 2 outs. They were one of the teams with the most runners left on base. They scored most of their runs on HR's in the playoffs so far. Not sure why you think they are a team is going to manufacture runs much.

If the Mets keep the Cubs in the ballpark the should win this series easily.

That said if the Cubs can continue to hit home runs almost at will, they are going to win the series easily.

the two teams aren't also defined by economic or regional shifts in the respective population of where the team plays (north side vs. south side). you wouldn't say a mets fan is any more or less a spoiled rich kid than a yankee fan, and here the stereotypical cub fan under 30 is exactly that...a dumb, spoiled frat boy. also, the mets, as mentioned above, are not an old franchise.

ALL new york fans suffer...because they are insufferable.
