what's sad abut hendry is if you look at pictures of him b4 and after the GM gig you can see that the job literally withered him. dude put on weight and aged really badly when he was GM, so say what you want about the guy (bidding against himself to overpay soriano by 30-50mil or whatever) but at least he seemingly really gave a shit about the job.

No doubt he cared. Not even questioned it.

But he didnt have the information to evaluate the players like they do today and even if he had it, he wouldnt know what to do with it

He played from his gut. It just doesnt work today. Can an old veteran give you a Gaetti month, sure, but in the long run you are going to lose trying to squeeze the last drops of toothpaste out of Griff Jr, Manny and McGriff.

Hendry always came across as a genuine guy. I think most can agree, he worked under what appeared to be the most-dysfunctional org structure as possible. it's hard to understand what was his doing and what was pushed down to him based on the sale of the cubs and Tribune co. That being said, 3 blemishes on his resume
1) At the end there were just of bad contracts on the books. No trade clauses out the ass.
2) Alfonso Soriano's contract was insane and looked like a Yankees / A-Rod deal where they were simply bidding against themselves
3) Milton Bradley. This was a bad idea and his press conference where he told everyone about their dinner and him saying at the end "I want to be a Cub" was enough to make anyone barf. He was a bad guy. it was a stupid contract.

He did do some good things, though and as I said earlier, he always came across as a decent, genuine person.

Trading Archer et. al. for Garza in a desperate misguided attempt to make the playoffs sure seems pretty crappy right now. Grimm and Edwards are nice, but imagine slotting Archer behind Arrieta?

ridiculous and will look even moreso if they don't win a world series. I don't want to hear bigfan bitch about statues in the OF when something like this is immediately immortalized

Of course, the hidden reason for it is because it is on the BUDWEISER SIGN and they probably received money from them for the additional advertising

Love when Sox nation adds subtle qualifiers. 'Will look bad if they dont win the World Series" lol

Used to be ....'When they dont make the playoffs"

Then became 'When they lose the WC"

Then became 'When they got the shit kicked out of them by the cards"

Now it is 'if they dont win the WS"

:D

What is the point of memorializing that?

It wasn't the longest HR in Wrigley, and helped the Cubs do the exact same thing they did in 2003. Advance to the NLCS.

Seems like something Brooks Boyer would do.

They said its temporary, until they decide what they wanted to do with it, just like the statues at Comiskular. :D

Remember when Junior Lake did his bat toss? Maddon was not a big fan and he got a stern lecture about it.

Heads up - If anybody is interested, the Trib is starting a series of 2015 Cubs posters today.

The first one is Rizzo on page 10 of the sports section.

Yes, I'm a graphic artist nerd who loves this stuff.

Blast from the past.

Lot of BIG names on the screen and Yosh is heavily featured.

Cubs Clinch The Division in Montreal

How many players in the Cub dugout do you remember?

As league champs, 2 weeks off for us. Had extra practice time. Decided I was going to start hitting. "COACH HELPED ME TAKE EXTRA BP!" (Shoud I repeat that?)

1st AB, Wilmette World Series, Line drive to LC alley. Double.

Followed by oppo double next AB. and a fly out. 2-3, 3 RBI, 2 Runs Scored.....Not bad for a kid batting .000 going into a World Series game in Little League

The only Major League Parks older than Roemer are Fenway Park (1912) and Wrigley Field (1916). Like those two, Roemer is now in the middle of a crowded residential area, but like them it has never lost its charm over the decades.

Yeah, I think thats kinda cool, even if I am sure the usual suspects dont.

At one point this season 10% of the active MLB managers played on that 1989 team. Sandberg, Girardi, and McClendon.

Maybe he will follow Peyton Manning in doing lucrative commercial endorsements after the season ends. Seems like he might be perfect for it.
