Chicago outdoorsmen provide proof of the Jealous Sox Fan trope:

Steve Sarley: Cub fan who doesn't care about the Sox
Dale Bowman: Sox fan who hates the Cubs

Earlier I intimated that the Cubs would sign Jordan Zimmerman.

This of course is folly.

They will, instead, sign Zach Grienke.

A lot of pitching available this offseason.

Edit: I would expect the Cubs to make a play for him or Price because they are TOR pitchers with no draft pick compensation attached. Wouldn't be surprised if they tried to bring back Cahill, too.

I don't think so. I don't think they need to. And if they take on another 30 year old guy for $150-200 million they're going to be choking on both him and Lester before those deals are done. Mike Leake or a trade for Tyson Ross seems much more Theo-like.

Because his contract would not be based just off of what he did this year. You don't really fail to understand that, do you?

Shark is 47 & 61 in his MLB career & he has only won more than 9 games once.

Not worth close to $90 million.

Shark will just be another name on the long list of guys who were paid way more than they were worth.
It sucks, but it happens all of the time.

Sure. But I think Samardzija believes he will minimally get the amount of the QO times four or five years on the open market. And I believe he is correct.

Ya, agreed. Plus he won't have to deal with Coop's drunk ass.

He just shows up hungover....thats why "Hermy" is there.

No way Shark is worth John Danks money.

I'd be afraid to qualify him. Afraid that he would take it.

Yes, the Sox will make the qualifying offer. They want that compensation pick. I don't think he accepts it. I FEAR the Cubs may have an interest in him. I know he has a particularly close relationship with Chris Bosio and would probably love to return to the team now that they are ready to win. But I definitely don't want him back. He has the ability, but lacks the mental makeup. Something goes wrong and he falls apart. the team is going poorly and he loses focus. No thanks.

The fact that this slug can make 16 million next year after the season he had really makes my balls hurt.

Yeah, they've tried several times. It was called "collusion", which is against the CBA, and they lost every time.

Epstein knows he dodged a bullet when he offered this chump 75 million, and numbnuts declined..he's never going to play for the Cubs again.. They know he's a loser. If the Cubs made him an offer it would be a lowball one; 2 years @ 14 per.

I'd be ok if they take him back on a one-year deal, but only after they've already signed another true #1 such as Price. (The idea of Price as a #3 is so much fun...) Signing Shark then as a #4 lets them dangle Hendricks out there if they think he's really going to turn into Rich Hill, and get rid of Hammel otherwise.

Theyre not gonna do that. Eventually, theyll have to pay all the Babe Ruths. Do you think theyre budgeting $300 million for 2020?

That's why I said only a 1-year deal. I think they'll trade on Castro and Hammel to pick up some salary relief for 2016, and roll with Russell/Baez at SS/2B.

But the fact that they made the NLCS, and thus the extra revenue that brings in, will convince Ricketts to open up the pocketbook a little more for 2016-2017.

Oh, the payroll will be bigger next year. I just don't see them signing one top tier free agent pitcher where they'll have to commit to $$$ and years, let alone two. I don't think they need to do that. And they've done well finding quality starters on the cheap. Now they can just keep them instead of flipping them.

Samardzija isnt signing a one year deal unless he accepts the QO which would be highly unusual.

No player has ever accepted a qualifying offer.

The Sox have to make that offer in order to a compensation pick if he declines and then signs else where.

Two part question:

Do the Sox make the offer and does Shark take it?

I say YES Sox make offer and NO Shark so he is history.

I don't see any chance that he takes the QO. The White Sox had better off that.

If he were to accept, he's the #3 or maybe even the #4 starter, pushes Danks to the #5 and Johnson probably out of the rotation.

It could cause the White Sox to move Johnson (or Quintana) for offensive help since you'd have to figure that locking up close to $16 million would limit their ability to make any significant free agent moves (I'm not convinced they will be overly active even with the money).

If the Cubs want him, do they they have to pay him as a #2 type starter even though he wouldn't be more than a #3? How does, if at all, does paying Arrieta factor into the Cubs aggressiveness in signing a guy like Shark to 4 of 5 years at 17-20 a season?

I think they would have to because someone is probably going to pay him like a #2 guy. But I believe it's more likely that they give Samardzija 20 for 4 than breaking the bank for Price. There are things to like about Samardzija from the modern perspective. Low mileage on his arm. Good stuff. No injury history. I find it somewhat odd that so many people argue with me so vociferously about how meaningless W/L record is, when W/L record is really the only knock against Samardzija. If you're looking at things that are now considered under the pitcher's "control", Samardzija has more than decent numbers. His K/9 is in the top 30 of active guys. His K/BB ratio is in the top 30. His HR/9 is in the top 50. It really shouldn't be that one bludgeons me like I'm some kind of fossil for believing in the value of W/L record and then turns around and uses it to illustrate how shitty Jeff Samardzija is.

If Arrieta keeps going anywhere close to what he's doing now, he's a $180 million guy, $30 million for six.
