He's not gonna get Chad Johnson, Marvin Harrison, Terrel Owens or Randy Moss type money. Those are number one guys.

He won't get that money.

I'm thinking more like Randle El or Laveraneus Coles type money.

He's not a #1 Grid. Just because he's better then a handful other teams receivers doesn't mean he's a number one.

It just means there are very few # 1's in the league.

Washington over paid for Randal El and I think he might be a better receiver. 3M a year sounds about right for Berrian.

He's the only Bears WR who consistently gets open. Berrian needs to be re-uped.

Rex not so much. Let him walk.

My nightmare is Derek Anderson signing with the Vikings. Then the Vikings sign away Berrian. Can you imagine the Vikings with a legit QB and AD???? We'd be so screwed.

A #1 receiver is defined (to me) as the top receiver on that particular team - that's all. There are 32 #1s in the league and many teams have better #2s, or #3s than some team's #1s.

Like I said, Berrian is one of the best 20 WRs in the league.

[Beardown's defenition of a #1 Wide Receiver]

1. Can beat you deep

2. Can make tough catches over the middle.

3. Fights for every ball.

4. Can break tackles and get RAC yards.

5. Catches 95% of the routine balls.

6 Catches 75% of poorly thrown balls that can be caught.

7. Can beat double coverage on occasion.

8. Good and willing blocker.

9. Excellent route runner.

Very few guys have all of these traits. That is why there are few number 1's. If you have 7 out of 9 of these I'll consider you a number 1.

Berrian lacks 2,3,4,5,7 and 8.

Thanks for your defenition. It doesn't negate the fact that statistically Berrian is in the upper echelon of the NFL.

Statistics lie. Football outsiders puts Berrian as either the 27th or 48th best receiver in the league, depending upon the metric used (he's reduced in one area because of the lack of consistency.)

Sometimes yards can be racked up at the end of games when the Bears are down and they're giving you completions. Think whatever you want Grid. Berrian is not an elite receiver. He's a decent #2 on a team that doesn't have a #1.

I'm with Grid Berrian is a #1. He's not in Moss's league but he'd be the best WR on probably 12 teams in the league

Who's made two game saving or winning catches in the past three weekends.

I agree. I gave Berrian 1 and 6 on my list. He makes the tough catches 75% of the time and yes, if you single cover him, he'll beat you deep.

But on that Raiders catch Grossman looked off the safety nicely so he couldn't get over to Berrian.

Waddle made a game winning catch against the Saints one time. Cap Boso had a game winning catch once.

No, I'm not saying Waddle or Boso is better than Berrian. LOL.

I'd love to be Hester right now. That one return where the Broncos squib-kicked it Deardorf was talking about how Hester got the Bears to the 50 without even touching the ball. And that's pretty much the truth. Where do you value a guy who just about guarantees you'll average about the 40 yard line any time a punt/kick is returnable? My guess? Ridiculous!

Berrian's a #2, and I can prove it:

1. The preponderance of teams in the NFL would be happy to have him as their #2
2. The preponderance of teams in the NFL would not be happy to have him as their #1

That said, it could possibly make sense for the Bears to give him lower-number-one money, simply due the the fact that Chicago is where receivers go to die. Sadly, it'll be a tough call.

OMG I remember most Bear fans sooooo wanted Randal El. Thank gawd we did NOT sign him. He's blowing in Washington.

Berrian has owned Randel El the last two years.

The Bears "woeful" quarterbacks would be starters on most of the teams you listed Grid.

I was pretty happy to see Berrian's one armed snag along the left sideline yesterday. Now THAT is the play made by a #1 WR.

Unfortunately the failure to extend and lay out for the deep ball down the left sideline - coupled with the drop that clanked off his hands in the closing seconds is NOT the type of play made by a #1 WR.

Then again, Chad Johnson going out of bounds a few feet short of a 1st down, on FOURTH DOWN is something I think Bernard Berrian is VERY capable of - and Chad Johnson's supposed to be 'one of the best wide receivers' in the league. NICE!

JD , Reported that the Bears D had no life in the 4th quarter and Brendon Ayanbadejo stated the defense and the fans quit in the 4th quarter. You had the Giants on the ropes and let 'em off the hook which shows me this team is packing it in.I blame the D coordinator and his stubbornness not to make adjustments. How do you stop LT, Larry Johnson , Marion Barber in the first 3 games and then give the next 6 games 100 yard rushers? How does it take Lovie 13 games to bench #20?

The team has quit and 5 and 11 is upon us folks...Draft talk is not far behind. O-Line , QB and Running backs.

I was there and I didn't think the fans quit. It was pretty loud, considering the conditions. What will take the fans out of it is jumping offsides to prolong drives by the opposition and giving up sacks in the red zone. If the the Bears three phases would have taken care of business, it wouldn't have mattered whether or not the "4th phase" quit.

I knew you'd come around Grid. But I didn't need to see Berrian's failures against the Giants to know he's not a number 1.

He's proven he's not a number 1 on several occasions.

I blame the Hester dropped pass, John Tait's false start, and Berrian's 4th quarter drop squarely on your shoulders Darren....
you big jerk.

ayenbadeho pulled the same shit last week, saying the fans quit. for a guy who only plays special teams, he sure has a big mouth. what a turd.

I never said he's NOT a Number One. I simply stated that more times than not yesterday he wasn't a Number One. Then pointed out that even Number Ones (like Chad Johnson) suck on occassion or have brain cramps.
