Fuck the lawyers who wrote this thing. Multiple teams have been screwed because of this "rule." In a long list of stupid rules in the NFL, this is by far the worst.

Typical over analyzed and over complicated NFL rules. There is a simple way to fix this BS. The rule should be that the player must have the ball at the end of the play. Period. Including the ground causing a fumble. Hold on to the damn ball until the play is over.

I might agree with him, except the ball was coming out as Tate take puts his second step down to start running. he caught the ball in the air, takes a step and before or as the ball goes down to become a runner, the ball starts to become a runner.

It should. Why shouldnt a ball carrier be expected to hold on to the ball until the play is over? Ground or no ground, if you lose the ball it should be a fumble.

well they say the moment you break the line its a td... so it shouldnt matter how long he held onto it, he scored. but then again he did jump to make the catch... whether he needed to or not, he did. so he needed two feet down for it to be a catch and he did not by the time the ball was moved

Ground causes tons of fumbles. It would lead to a ton of chaotic post play scrums, increase injury potential, and make the players look worse with the significant increase in fumbles. It will never happen.

This whole mess could be avoided if they never started that break the plane BS. Jump over that line like Walter or finish your play into the end zone. Why did offense get this much power? I hate it.

The rule is obviously poorly written and ambiguous and it's enforcement proves it. Referees don't even understand it. The only redeeming quality it has is that it may give Joe buck a stroke trying to explain it

Neither was Calvin Johnson a few years ago at Soldier Field, yet they ruled that incomplete. The NFL continues to make up its own rules as we go along...both on the field, as we saw yesterday, and off the field, Ray Rice.
