Is Joe Maddon baseball Phil Jackson?

Similar to Phil, many people says he's a master motivator, etc., and everything was great when Phil had the talent (Bulls, Lakers) but when he doesn't (Knicks) it doesn't work out so well. The things that Maddon does seem to work well when he has the talent (Devil Rays, this Cubs team).

I know this Cubs team is ahead of schedule, but I'm wondering how similar he and Phil are in this regard.

I think he should be greased up and shirtless.

Baseball managers don't run a ton of stuff. They stand on a dugout step and hope Schwarber hits one out.

I think so. They say he's setting a bad example for shivering players who don't appear ready to play baseball. Hanley would order all balaclavas removed from the clubhouse. Fuck these pussies. Except Arrieta. Maddon should make him wear long sleeves.

I think Phil gets a raw deal. And he's not coaching the Knicks. Its not really a 1:1 comparison

And people act like winning with great players is automatic. Other coaches had MJ and Scottie and Kobe And Shaq. None of them won a title.

This quote is killing me.

All I will say is that no, Joe Maddon is not baseball Phil Jackson, unless I really misread Maddon's wikipedia page.

Well, Maddon did play the Rocky theme after the game.

Great motivational tool.

y'know, I wouldn't want anyone else to manage the team. But you can still question some moves. Both can be true, eh?

But if a fan can legitimately question the moves of a professional baseball manager, I really think it speaks to the minimal effect he actually has on the games.

he has an impact whether his moves backfire or succeed. I'm not following you.

Arrieta was not FOCUSED early. He has commented about it twice during the playoffs. Talked about his breathing and the effect of the crowd. First pitch of the game, Wild pitch...thats evidence of just not being right to start the game. Probably too pumped up, but still not in normal mindset, after Murphy he settled down.

Not much to come at Maddon about, unless you just want to start a thread to seem like you know what you are talking about.

Did you want to pull Arrieta in the first?

or did you want Soler in RF instead of Coughlin, who made a good catch (Not great as the TV guys tried to make it) and he hit what probably would have been a HR.

Outside of that, what are you criticizing?

Mets starting pitching has been better. Cubs have hit some hard balls right at them...Mets finding holes i.e. Granderson single into the shift and Cespedes IF single to deep SS.

Mets have earned the W's...they have produced when necessary, both teams had 5 hits last night. Mets deserve the W....simple as that.

I wasn't talking about any of that. I was talking about the heavy pitch counts in Arrieta's last 7 or 8 starts in the regular season when they pretty much knew they had the wild card game. Especially his last 5 starts in the regular season.

Catch that play in the Colts game last night?

Does this mean that Joe Maddon has to pay for his own drinks in Chicago?

I'm not sure you can. You really don't believe you can successfully coach an NFL or an NBA team, do you? But the respect issues aside (like players thinking, "Who the fuck is this guy?"), I do believe you could effectively manage a big league baseball club.

Let's put it this way: If I put you in a suit so you looked just like Pete Carroll, I believe the fans would be screaming, "WHAT HAPPENED TO PETE?? HE SUCKS ALL OF A SUDDEN!" If I put you in Joe Maddon suit I don't think anyone would notice.

I can't critique a guy who has taken the team this far in his 1st year. The Cubs need more guys that can make contact and stop striking out so much. They got this far with mediocre SP 3-5 and Lester was no great shakes either.

why do you think he keeps playing LaStella? If Joe gets his way they'll be a contact hitter or two next season. A Jason Kendall, Ichiro type.

I think questioning a move by a manager is the same as blaming Bartman. It's focusing on stuff that doesn't really mean much. And I'm not saying I never question a manager. But I usually do it in a fit of anger moments after it's occurred. Once I've calmed down and become rational I realize how little it actually means.

Probably because he understands Baez is a low OBP guy who is likely to strike out.

LaStella has hit it on the button twice in the last 2 nights and has nothing to show for it also.
