kind of in crisis mode

would you move up both Lester and Arrietta (if needed) to pitch on 3 days rest? I think if I were the manager I would. Then come back with Lester in Game 7. I know that puts a lot of strain on both of them but its not unprecedented and they have all winter to rest.

Which game of the World Series would Lester then be lined up for?

:)

I think Lester would be crap starting on three days' rest. But, if they are down 3-0, he is in the bullpen in Game 4 to give them an inning against a bunch of LH hitters, and Jake is starting Game 5. Lester then would come back for Game 6.

I think the Cubs should start Hammel in game 3, not Hendricks. His soft toss pitching is like tee ball to the Mets lineup.

If the Cubs lose game 3, you have to start Lester in 4 and Arrieta in 5 (if it gets that far). You have to go into panic mode.

Sounds like Matt Harvey's arm is about to fall off. Things could be looking up if the Cubs can win game 3.

Start Travis Wood tomorrow. I have a hunch.

Right now we need to go with Hendricks tomorrow, and then watch the weather...rain expected Wednesday night.... All a matter of when it starts.... Weather guessers on the weather channel say it could happen some time between 7 and 10.... That will change I am sure in the morning tomorrow.... It has a chance to make decisions touchy

I would start Wood first. Who knows he might revert to 2013 form.

Where are you getting that? I read that he came out of the game in great shape.

ESPN said he has swelling in his triceps.

No. I would not change the rotation. Arrieta is too valuable to this team to do that with. He will have pitched almost 100 innings this season over last. I don't put further stress on that arm by pitching him on short rest. Quite frankly, I trust Hendricks about as much as I trust Lester, so I have Hendricks take the ball tomorrow. Hammel takes it on Wednesday (especially if there may be rain delays. Do you want to burn a top pitcher in a game where a rain delay could necessitate him being pulled early?) and Lester again on Thursday. I would not panic and make decisions that could have a long term detrimental effect.

Long term effects? The Cubs might only have 2 or 3 games left, Steve.

Really? So they have cancelled the 2016 season? The 2017 season and beyond? The team is embarking on a 5-7 year stretch (at least) where they should contend for championships. I do not care to risk one of the most valuable pieces of the puzzle on a game that is not a game 7 of the NLCS or World series.

Remember when the Nats shut down Strasburg? How many playoff games has he pitched in since? You contend for this year's Championship and worry about 2016 and 2017 when they get here.

No. That is the thinking used by a franchise trying to catch lightning in a bottle in a single season. A team embarking on a long period of sustained success will protect it's most valuable assets, knowing you probably are not going to win a World Series with just 2 top tier starting pitchers anyway. Next year is likely to be a lot more realistic after they add another arm or two.

The Cubs won 97 games and were one of the best teams in baseball by any metric. Nobody is going to take you seriously if you're suggesting they are going to be significantly better in the future. They gonna win 110 games next year or something?

I think they may win more than 97, yes. But more importantly, they will be better constructed where the rotation is concerned to contend in the playoffs. You need at least 3 starting pitchers capable of beating good teams. Guys like Hammel, Haren and Hendricks can beat Milwaukee and Cinncinnatti, but Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Los Angeles and New York .....maybe not. You need at least 3 guys capable of beating those teams as often as not or better. Hendricks and Hammel may be able to do it on occasion, but do you feel confident when they are entrusted to win a game against one of those teams? I think the Cubs will add one or two more guys that can do that this winter.
