Hammel has his first good start in two months.

The Cub bats come alive against an inexperienced Met pitcher.

Steven Matz has thrown 661 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system in 2015, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season and the MLB Postseason. In 2015, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (95mph), also mixing in a Curve (77mph), Change (84mph) and Sinker (94mph). He also rarely throws a Slider (87mph).

Basic description of 2015 pitches compared to other LHP:
His fourseam fastball has heavy sinking action, results in many more groundballs compared to other pitchers' fourseamers, has well above average velo and has slight armside run. His curve has slight glove-side movement. His change results in many more groundballs compared to other pitchers' changeups, is slightly firmer than usual, has slight armside fade and has some natural sink to it. His sinker has well above average velo and has some natural sinking action. His slider (take this with a grain of salt because he's only thrown 11 of them in 2015) is thrown extremely hard, is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' sliders, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sliders, has less than expected depth and has primarily 12-6 movement.

Jason Hammel has thrown 20,592 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2007 and 2015, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season, the MLB Postseason and Spring Training. In 2015, he has relied primarily on his Slider (85mph), Fourseam Fastball (93mph) and Sinker (93mph), also mixing in a Curve (77mph). He also rarely throws a Change (86mph).

Basic description of 2015 pitches compared to other RHP:
His slider has some two-plane movement. His fourseam fastball has essentially average velo and has some added backspin. His sinker has less armside run than typical, has little sinking action compared to a true sinker and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sinkers. His curve generates more whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' curves and has a sharp downward bite. His change is slightly firmer than usual.

i am very disappointed that lester is not pitching this game. i trust that madden has his reasons, but when lester was brought here it was partly because of his veteran leadership and playoff chops. i was able to reconcile his solid but not dominant regular season with the fact that when the chips were down he was a guy that would want the ball and would go out and carry this team in a must-win situation. maybe he does want it and is being over-ruled by maddon, but it is hard to imagine a scenario where anyone feels better about hammell on full rest over lester on 3 days. this is a must-win as it gets. if lester were to walk into maddons office last night after the game and tell maddon that he wants the ball, let me lead this team in game 4, i can't imagine maddon not letting him go tonight. if not for a game like tonight, then why did the Cubs invest in a guy like Lester?

I'm sure there is more to it than that, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. that said, i hope hammell pitches well, the cubs win and lester is fully rested for tomorrow.

No way should Lester be pitching tonight.

Bad thought MOFO.

Where are Eddie Vedder and John Cusack? In the house or in the shadows? I know Bill Murray is there. Just haven't seen the other two.

david ross is starting at C and lester isn't pitching today... so if the cubs stay alive then lester goes in game 5 and we assume ross is back out there, right?

either joe maddon is channelling his inner j-pasta to learn montero some edumacation for blowing last night's game on the passed ball (cuz i dont think the mets get out to 5-2 if they dont get that third run when they did) or he's being really clever wanting to be able to drop montero's bat into the lineup whenever the fuck he wants in order to have that much more firepower for this game and hoping he runs into one that turns into a long one.

regardless, it should be interesting to see what maddon pulls out of his bag of crazy tonight.

anyways im finishing up a cigarette as the first pitch starts and i have this sinking feeling it'll be 1-0 mets by the time i get inside. TRY GETTING THE LEAD, CUBBIES, IT'LL HELP!

This team is so pathetic. This is what they get for idiotically neglecting starting pitching.

Wow, un-fucking real. Hammel better be dealt in the offseason. Fuck B&B for saying the Cubs had 3 guy that could start a opener in a playoff series. For a pitching staff not to be able to get out of a 1st inning without giving away the game is unreal. For your 155 million dollar pitcher not to be able to go on 3 days rest is ridiculous as well. Theo fucked this team by not getting a legit pitcher at the deadline.

well hey, aren't you sick of the cubs dominating the chicago sports market when the franchise is so historically bad and terrible? =D

I am not trying to be a dick but what a kick in the nuts for the start of this for the hopeful crowd. Also, as I type Kyle should never be in LF again. EVER. Bernsie called a caller a moron for wanting to trade him to a AL team. Stupid of Bernsie to make fun of that caller.
