I work with people, every single day, that I do not like. Not by choice. I am essentially "forced" to work with them.
We are not friends.

Classmates does not equal friends. Group partners does not equal friends. Sports teammates does not equal friends.

It's happening with the girls at my school. There was a special lunch for one of the crazy ones. A couple are trying to get the school to step in with non school time which is freaking ridiculous. Other thing some of the nicer or smarter kids are always put with the worst ones. They are still young, they need a break from them sometimes. It teaches them shit too cuz you know who is doing the work and who is not. That's not helpful to anybody.

If it makes you feel better (probably not), it seems like it's happening with the near-adolescent girls in every school. Something seems to have changed in recent years, IMO. The girls generally seem to be the ones that demonstrate the drastically outward negative behaviors.......whether it be to attract attention from the males, from the adults, whoever. It's the girls. And it's bad.

Bullying, fighting, big disruptions, etc. It's an epidemic the last couple years. And girls tend to hang on to shit longer than guys (not new). But again, I think you'd find teachers saying the same thing about most schools.

Like I said before, what is the downside to learning the skills to stay out of crap like that and diffusing it for yourself? I teach my own kids these skills all the time. If they hurt your feelings, they aren't your friend. Don't be friends with them. But if they are around, respect them as much as you can or have to.

Where's the down side?

Is this about academics? (Not behavior?)
If so, most studies would show that this is a good practice. Students with high ability practicing with a student that is of lower ability?

Where is the downside for either one?

Wait until Jan 1 comes around........

The one good thing about the new law is getting rid of "zero tolerance" school rules. For example, some schools have an automatic 10 days out of school for fighting. This can range from the bullshit shove and hope my friends break it up to someone getting their head bashed in on the side of a sink in the bathroom.

If those are the parents/grandparents (who increasingly are paying for this batch) who swarmed to the suburbs 30-40 years ago and passionately still support the legacy of Nixon, Reagan and GHW Bush, those weren't exactly the free speech/civil rights/economic equality crowd that are contributing to your current misplaced sense of irony.

The hypocrisy of parents/grandparents is a difficult this to overcome. Vote Dr. Ben/Rubio/Trump/Carly/Jeb!/Cruz!

You're my guy but you really have to put your democratic bias into everything.

I'm quite certain the vast majority of the students who were surveyed are not voting for those guys. This seems to be overwhelmingly coming from the left.

I would agree with this.

The self-marginalization of the Republican Party has led to a "left wing" that includes as many social authoritarians as social libertarians and as such is collapsing under its own crappy weight.

Reviewing some College kid resumes. I have been laughing pretty hard.

I dont use Facebook, but I would imagine its pretty easy to use...lol...as my mom uses it.

Yet, 50% of the resumes list it as a skill!

Next time I update my resume I'm going to list Chicago Sports Fan Message Board - shifted community paradigms by implementing dynamic content indicative of making fun of Score hosts

I had a conversation about this subject the other night. If you list proficiency with MS Word as a "skill", I'm not hiring you.

Nephew is in his first year of homework. My sister and Bro inlaw have made every excuse possible for him at this point. He struggles, he doesnt grasp it, headaches,ADHD, ADD, really makes him feel bad....I took a look at the 7 questions! All very easy and I know he can do them, but that would mean shutting down the Sony Playstation and Minecraft for more than 2 minutes to actually work on these complicated issues.

The problem with this brave new paradigm is that we can't reasonably operate a civil society based upon the feelings of individuals since feelings are personal and specific to said individuals. But I also think it's probably a knee-jerk reaction to paint an entire generation as hothouse flowers. I can remeber my grandfather saying shit to me like, "Two World Wars and a Depression, you wouldn't know how to handle that." Which I think is bullshit. Most people are capable of dealing with what is thrown their way. I say most. There will always be the weak. But I don't think as a society we should be encouraging weakness either.

Yeah, I have had students complain (like when I talked about oral hallucinations about hearing the voice of god as a symptom of schizophrenia, thus CLEARLY saying Jesus and all those people in the bible were schizophrenic) but that's fun. I honestly never trigger warn, but I have a thing in my syllabus that says I will talk about and show things that might make you uncomfortable. You have been warned. Also, if my class was a movie it would be rated R for strong language and occasional violence.

I was taught some freshman English lit class by a randy nun who interpreted everything written as having a sexual meaning. I think the old coot thought she'd be shocking but instead, I was like "game on!" King Arthur pulling Excalibur from the stone...clearly a young man's sexual awakening with masturbation.

Bill Maher had on some marginal democratic presidential candidate who was calling for constitutional conventions every decade or so. Douchebag Maher was very supportive with some quote from Jefferson.

A well drawn contract, even a social contract, is timeless in my opinion. A Constitution shouldn't be reviewable based on the whims of a generation.

But the United Kingdom doesn't even have a Constitution as we think of it, correct? Isn't "the British constitution" just what they call the entirety of their laws over centuries? I don't know about having a constitutional convention every ten years like Lessig was saying, but I do think we've gone too far in the other direction with the veneration of Our Most Sacred Parchment.

I don't think this is the lesson they have to learn so often at 8-10. It's not fair to those students. They should not have to take it, take it, and take it til they fall apart themselves. You aren't teaching them anything. My opinion is teach the asshole to not be the asshole.

All these new learning techniques and parents are so impressed their kids can manipulate an IPhone...

but these kids are such dumbasses!

Haved looked over 50 resumes today.

Can they even add, or is that politicially incorrect becase it is culturally biased? or is it secually biased?

I watch my nephew try to do his few questions and you think the kid is having an aneurism!!! but he is being taught methods that will enable him to solve these issues one day?

I wonder if this kid will be able to function?

Have no idea what they teach them.

last month sat for lunch with a bunch of 13 year olds and they tell me they all sit in calss with laptops, sending messages back and forth.

But watching the nephew play the part as if he was in actual head pain because of these questions, then he is OK when he plays Xbox.
