How do you think that happened? Did people become less violent. Did reasons for violence disappear?

Better policing and population decline.

People are probably about the same.

The media and social media is what is fueling this.

The prevailing theory seems to be that leaded gasoline/lead paint was causing it based on the results that can be seen world wide when it is removed.

I feel somewhat compelled to let people know this is not a Rick troll job; this is indeed a commonly-cited reason. I think the next likeliest reason trotted out is better access to safe abortions, thus reducing the number of "unwanted children" roaming the Earth. I cannot speak to the veracity on either suggestion, though I don't think either is without some degree of merit.

If I'm not mistaken lead paint was used for like 100 years. why did it make crime spike in the 1990s?

Leaded gasoline too, which did see major increases in use over those 100 years.

I don't think they'll ever be able to say it for certain, but the pattern has taken place in many countries with the same pattern of less violent crimes in age groups who were not exposed to lead during development.

Well, if we believe that it isn't a change in the way crime is reported, and frankly, I think it would be difficult even for slippery Rahm to underreport crime by 75%, there has to be some logical cause, because I certainly don't believe people have gotten "better".

It's not a good point. Those people were given housing vouchers and they took their crime to other neighborhoods in the city (some places where crime was low) and they barbecue in front of their homes when they aren't committing crime.

Police do a better job fighting crime. We can't talk about the reduction in crime because that will mean fewer cops. If we highlight every murder or shooting the people will demand more cops. Even when the country was in the middle of a depression crime didn't rise. Better policing is one of the main reasons.

It's behind a paywall, but check out the Stanford study titled "Front lawn barbecues and violent crime in the 21st century".

What claim? Cabrini Green was torn down recently and the families in all of the projects that were displaced were given housing vouchers. This is well known. Most stayed in the city and some went to the burbs. The barbecuing stuff is my opinion.

One of the main reasons for tearing down the projects was that they bred crime. ie, crime would be reduced in absolute terms if the concentrations of poverty were broken up. What were the effects? Did it work? Did the crime just move somewhere else? Do the answers to those questions provide any guidance as to public policy moving forward?

I don't know. You said it. Outside of technology, obviously, do you think those things are better than they were in 1975? Maybe it's the cameras.

The main reason was prime real estate. Crime moved to other areas. Those people weren't used to functioning outside of those projects.

Even before Rahm they were trending down. Down about 500 from when I was a kid.

The murders are down for one reason only.. EMT response time and better care @ the ER... Shootings are up..people are just receiving better care and surviving.

Everyone has a phone too. I think all of those things have improved nationwide in the last 40 years. Maybe people got a little better too.

I should have said one of the main reasons cited.....

lot of questions in this thread and not a lot of solid evidence of anything.

From the 60's to the 90's the EMT's response time and care improved dramatically but murders increased by nearly 600 in Chicago from the 60's to the 90's. Over the past 25 years response time and treatment have also improved but murders are down nearly 500 a year from the peak in the 90's and violent crime is down. Reality is policing has improved.

There are lots of stats. You don't believe the numbers because they don't fit your narrative. I don't have a concrete answer why they are down dramatically nationwide. My theory is the police are doing a great job. It could be the paint.

applying RICO laws to street gangs might be another reason.
