You seem to have the strange idea that the only "useful" information is that which helps you buy the things you need/want.
It has nothing to do with buying things. I just can't come up with a way it would be useful especially in the age of technology where my phone can tell me the information in about 3 seconds.

Because I don't memorize cities in Europe.

Truth and this is part of the problem we have with kids, learning, and education today, imo. A friend of ours went to a see a speaker about it. He said the guy was really interesting and made some good points. Kids don't really problem solve, fail, or retain info anymore. They know they have to just push a button or reset something. They don't know what to do if they can't.

This is what common core math is trying to solve and I don't think you are a fan of it.

It's about the thought process rather than just the correct answer.

There is interesting research on this topic and the way people learn and how the brain absorbs knowledge. When a kid has a class and the teacher is filling his head it takes some time to literally sink in. But the student of today, as soon as that class is over, pulls out a phone or some handheld device which impedes that learning experience. It doesn't take long. If that kid had taken fifteen minutes after class to simply walk around, he would absord the material far better than he will after pulling out the handheld.

I thought common core math was about prescribing a thought process while proscribing alternatives that might be valid.

It's not proscribing them forever. Just like cursive, which ironically seems to be going away too, didn't proscribe writing each letter out later.

he would also be better at absorbing by handwriting class notes rather than typing

No, I'm not a fan. I have several issues with common core math. 2 & 3 are sort of the same.

1) Material is too difficult for the age. The concepts and level of problems are not appropriate, imo.
2) Math is solving problems by using a formula or theory. They don't learn these now so each problem is new. They have to think too much thru each answer and never learn what knowledge they have to apply or why.
3) It's fucking confusing. Nothing is taught. There is no true reason why you solve a problem a certain way there is no good way to tackle a problem. You just do. They don't know the process they should be using and are trying to get them to use a thought process for which they have no base.
4) The grading is different (at least for our school) they are passing kids who clearly have no idea what is going on.

problem is the teachers don't even understand common core (otherwise they would have gone into engineering), and they are hardly in a position to explain to parents WTF is going on.

I understand it. I don't like it. They don't seem to master the skill sets, everything is kinda shakey.

I thought common core math was about prescribing a thought process while proscribing alternatives that might be valid.

It focuses on the process more than memorization of facts.

Also, we should point out that as Spaulding's post indicates Common Core is about more than how to do Math. It's a whole system.

I dont mind the Math part, but some of the testing methods and focus is crazy, imo

That's what I'm saying though. Simply knowing the standard formula to do something isn't as important as being able to think critically about it. Your complain was that they don't problem solve or fail. That is what they are doing. Math for me was pretty much just "memorize the process and then do it" which is fine until you no longer need to multiply 1,562 by 1,222 which is pretty much never needed and can be done easily with a computer/calculator/smartphone.

It is interesting that many of the people who scream "Gun Control" after every attack here are quiet about it with regards to France.

That's more of a domestic issue for most people though

I will never tell my kids their work or anything else is too hard. The last thing they need is me giving them an excuse. I never understood why parents think that's helpful. I believe it usually means that the parent doesn’t understand it and they are too lazy to try. There are so many tools available for them if they cared to put forth the effort to help their children.

I might be wrong, but isn't usually one of the arguments that other countries don't have these issues like we do?

Or that he's probably been responsible for the deaths of more innocent Muslims than all the terrorist organizations combined in the past 7 years.
