My point is if it happened here, you would hear more because its something we (young americans) can change

They aren't teaching either well. They will always have to carryout the operations with common core because they no longer memorize facts. I don't think they will be successful with word problems or algebraic expressions under common core either. They are taught to use bar models and guess and check methods. They have no idea what balancing an equation or using substitution methods or anything means. There is little base, so when they do fail, they have no idea why or why their thinking was wrong. I can do these problems mostly because I know what needs to be done. I can't explain it using their method because there is little reason behind it. You just think that way (process) with out being taught how or why to think that way. It's bizarre. We aren't into geometry yet but I fully expect to see a problem solving for a side of a right angle triangle without the pythagorean theorem.

It's very common to point to Europe as an example of why they do things better.

I have issues with all of it. On my sons last test he was asked about greek root words. They don't use the results from 1 of the tests.

Im not sure about anyone else's experience but memorizing facts is still a part of my daughter's curriculum. I disagree about word problems. Word problems are all about the process (which is the focus here)

Fair enough but the fact that it didnt happen here is still a big reason why you dont hear it as loud.

I can't really speak as to how well they are doing it by you(or by me to be honest).

I'm just saying what the theory about it seems to be.

Neither have I. We do the work given but I do think the some of the concepts are too hard and the way they are teaching it is dumb. We now work on extra problems for an hour 4 times a week. He is not a huge fan.

I'm always griping about all the work my kids get shoveled.

I'm not a huge fan either. I know he would get this in 2-3 years being taught how to balance both sides of an equation.

The theoretically world. It works great in theory.

It seems that everything is fair game these days. My point is that the right shouts that we shouldn't politicize tragedies, when the left does it. But, it's okay for them to do it, namely Newt Gingrich, in this instance.

It's all spin. The news reporting is mostly alarmist, so it's hard to watch these days. I catch quite a bit of the Sunday morning talk show circuit, and everyone just spins any event to suit their political interests.

You really can't watch Fox News or MSNBC and come away with a realistic view of the world. CNN has gone tabloid and is over the top with talking heads. PBS still does a solid job, but you basically get one hour per night of global/national news followed by one our of Chicago tonight. NPR is ok, but I am still avoiding it over the Juan Williams crap.

In print, I like the WSJ, but that is obviously slanted rightward. The Economist is the best publication overall with excellent global reporting, but they have a lot of biases as well. They are extremely interventionist and a huge proponent of mass migration. I am not a NY Times reader, but they seem to have solid reporting on the few stories I see.


Is it any shock that Americans are woefully uniformed on global matters. As Chus has pointed out above, people are being informed by Fox News. I had to turn that crap off because I refuse to watch propaganda 24/7. And MSNBC is not any better. They just have less impact because their ratings are lower.

I can't even think of the proper label for CNN, but it hardly seems like a news network anymore. They want to be first, so they go with false information. They were just throwing shit at the wall, hoping something would stick with Sandy Hook, the former California cop who was shooting cops, the missing Malaysian jet, etc. How does anybody watch that network?
