Its like the people who start the drug testing argument with "hey, if its ok to drug test me for work..."

The reality is most people who are against testing for welfare would also be against testing for employment

Go ahead. Argue it. How do you balance those 2 things?

I think the EMT is drastically underpaid and should be bumped way up.

I think the minimum should be around 11-12 and the EMTs should make around 17 (although Id have to research that more)

You can disagree or say its not feasible or whatever but I dont think anyone is saying they think fast food workers should make more than EMTs

McDonalds workers make 15. EMT's make 20.

Easy.

I look at that as kicking the can down the road in a sense but okay. EMTs make about $17 an hour +/- $2.

Not compassionate enough. McDonalds workers make 25, EMTs make 40.

Once again, and it seems like I have to scream this out.

A $15 minimum wage is LOGICAL based on past levels. Even if you simply adjust for inflation it should be something like $12 an hour, and that doesn't factor in productivity gains. $15 an hour only seems high because of what the current number is.

You'd have a hard time making a case for a $25 minimum wage.

Or a $15 one. It would only work in a handful of states economically.

So how many states shut down with a $15 minimum wage?

It should be adjusted for where people live. You can live like a king on $15/hour, in some backwoods, rural area. $15/hr doesn't get you shit in New York City or Chicago.

I honestly don't see that as a problem though.

What's the worst case scenario? People move to the middle of nowhere seeking all those $15 jobs that would be scarce?

12 seems like the most doable and reasonable number at this point

Probably what it would have to be, but there has to be a long term solution that doesn't let it get to the point it is now.

This is going to be a big deal when we continue to automate out many of the middle class jobs and there is a huge surplus of workers who are willing and able to work but can only find "unskilled labor" to do.

12 now and never to be separated more than ___ percent from inflation

This. I am in different manufacuturing plants at least a couple times/month. In the 10 years I have been doing this, the number of people you see in a plant is shrinking faster than ever. You used to have 10-50 guys at the packaging stage of a product. now you have one guy standing around making sure the packaging equipment doesn't get jammed up.

I honestly don't know what the hell people are going to do for a living anymore.

I wasn't suggesting it would be a problem. I generally agree with you on this issue.

It would most definitely be a problem though. It's the exact same philosophy Bernstein is ridiculed for in telling people of Englewood to just move to avoid violence.

Id wager 90% of people who post that have a job that can be automated

Its not the exact same. Bernstein is telling people to just up and move. In Rick's scenario they are moving specifically to make more money which makes the original move more feasible.

That is going to happen regardless.

The dumbest argument of all is that companies choose not to automate their processes because labor is cheap. Computers are still cheaper than paying someone by the hour.

Your whole approach to this seems to be way too simplistic. You are completely ignoring the different values the dollar has in the country, and basically telling people to move once this is enacted if it's not good enough for their area.

I don't think you understood what I said.

If someone is poor in Chicago, but can live a great life in Middleofnowheresville, IL then they can move there or they can simply enjoy the higher pay they get in Chicago while not living as great of a life.

I'm just not seeing the problem.
