last friday it was the odd announcement that the new episode of the soup would be shown at a later date cuz of the paris terror attacks (??? maudlin IMO. they just re-ran an old peisode in its place and claimed that the episode would merely be shown later. it's one thing if they're doing it live that night and didnt wanna perform, but uhh... ok) --- and now today we find out that the only reason to watch E! has been canceled and its last episode is dec 18th (and i hope to god 2 of those arent the 2015 clipdown)

sooooo yeah, even tho they were doing remotes at talladega a few weeks ago and they surely bring in people who wouldnt otherwise watch E!, the show is ending after 11yrs. like a lot of other long-in-the-tooth shows it probably isn't as good as it was 5+ years ago (especially since the last few years seemed to favor celebrity cameos/skits/plugs over running jokes or essentially tv memes) but hey it was still out there and it was still pretty good in that you'd find out about a bunch of tv shows you'd otherwise never know about, let alone if there was anything hilarious on the bachelor that you missed out on by having a soul and whatnot.

maybe theres a chance it ends up going the way of joel mchale's other show, community, and ends up on another network or yahoo screen or hulu or even netflix or something.... i'd imagine that it cant be too expensive to just have joel mchale, a writing/production team, and a green screen..... but maybe it's time for joel to focus on his bit roles all over the place (he's in the x-files revival FFS! and who could forget him in sons of anarchy? spider-man 2 anyone? "snooty banker" IIRC) and it's time for television to get rid of a show that makes it look bad/worse and all the more absurd?

joel and the soup walked a fine line between being inclusively funny and, example, being daniel tosh sneering at you from a place of superiority. you always got the feeling that joel was there in the trenches with you just ?!?! at the crap he was seeing, whereas whenever i see tosh.0 you got the vibe that the ex-male-model knows he's better than all this internet garbage, and then all the skits were about inserting him in with the internet meme to ham it up and mug for the camera nonstop (usually "look at daniel act the fool while he's mostly naked!") --- plus joel was a total nobody b4 the soup (he had a local seattle tv station sketch comedy show and that was about it) so whenever he started doing other stuff it seemed like "our guy is making it!" as opposed to other guys doing clip shows as something on the downside of their 15mins of fame. it's hard to explain, but i think that joel walked the line between "in on the joke" and "condescending to you" rather brilliantly, and that's why he's got a ~11yr run out of the gig.

ah well, c'est la vie.... strike one of the few "appointment television" shows out of my shrinking list. anyone else watch this?

Best soup I've ever had was the Green Chile Soup at the Cafe Central in El Paso, TX.

Never saw the show.

Best soup I've had is either my uncle's clam chowder or a bisque but can't remember where.

Not sure if it's considered a soup but Heaven on Seven gumbo is #1.

#2 is green chile.

#3 is the lobster bisque from Capital Grille.

I grow to appreciate soup the older I get. I like making giant pots of soup on cold fall/winter days.

Shaw's makes a good bisque.
So does Hugo's.

I need a ruling: Is gumbo really a soup?

Google tells me it's a stew ... kinda like a leper in a hot tub.

I don't know what that means, but it sounds delicious.

I love a good gumbo. I need a trip to Ron's. Board road trip?

Been there. Pretty good.

Pretty even to Chinn's seafood gumbo.

I've been to Ron's as well. Great food if you can get a seat.

I've only had crab legs at Chinn's.
Well, crab and some cheap kind of rolls smothered in more garlic than I have ever seen anywhere else in my whole life.

Fresh Catch at Chinn's is the way to go. Can't really go wrong.

Try the Grouper. (And I generally hate fish).

I didn't realize the soup was still on. Actually, Wednesday I was also surprised. The news was on while we ate and after that came ET which I never watch. They were celebrating their 30th anniversary. I felt old.

Great show about 10 years ago. I only watch it sporadically now. I don't dislike Joel but the constant cameos by unfunny hacks like Aziz Ansari really turned me off. Too much grab ass and cross promotion. Show was its peak when Henson was the host and it was known as Talk Soup. Credit to Joel for reviving it and making it great again after two failed hosts (Sparks and Tyler).

Yeah, I think a big reason why I stopped watching was the constant "guest stars". They are absolutely unnecessary & most of them are just reality hacks.

John Henson was the king.

The best lobster bisque I've had was actually in Quebec City. Ristorante Il Teatro

Was surprised to find a good italian seafood spot in the heart of French Canada. Though bisque makes sense, of course.

Lot of Italian immigration to Montreal. Not unthinkable that some would move downriver.

this thread is perfectly symbolic of why the show got canceled.

yeah, the name is pretty dumb and it's essentially an inside joke based on the original "talk soup" name.... but let's not forget that when this show started off it had a goofy name like "the reality show awards of the week" or something, and then only after they realized that this name was horrible and it wasnt gonna work did they decide to rename it as "the soup" and brand it as a spiritual successor to "talk soup" and try to milk some ratings off of that longtime e! show.

aha, the original name was the "What The...? Awards" but then the wikipedia entry itself says it was changed to "the soup" to maintain name recognition with "talk soup." so yeah, unless after the ~2yr layoff they retained most/a-bunch of the staff of talk soup, it was never technically anything more than a spiritual successor to talk soup, it's just that nowadays with the similar names they bunch them together into one program in order to milk that longevity for cred.

that said, unless this thread was actually a cunning attempt to derail/subvert a sini thread as i've prolly done too many times over the years to other threads with my whole tangential style, the dumb name + the totally niche-at-best-audience + the lack of mainstream buzz/awareness = people going SOUP, HUH? and then talking about actual soup.

it's just like how the head writer / exec producer guy on twitter said a day after the cancellation news "oh go figure that NOW #TheSoup is finally fucking trending" --- too little too late. but yeah i echo the sentiments of whoever it was earlier that pointed out that the show is way too much about some lower-tier celebrity coming on to plug their latest bullshit, and thus we get too many dumbass guest gags taking the place of proper soup humor because they have to cowtow to the celebrity guest and make sure that they're included in everything. nowadays the soup's listings include the celebrity guest's name in the episode listing, so what once was a kinda cool thing where they'd have one of their frequent targets up to do a bit or two now is some celebrity showing up to do 5-10 little bits and often like 1/4 to 1/3 of the show is trying to force in celebrity bits.....

so yeah indeed just like most things in life the soup was better a few years ago, but that's just because the whole world as a whole WAS better a few years ago as i figure that just about everything peaked in the 90s and it's been all downhill from there ever since. #CestLaVie on twitter, where you can follow me sinicalypse (@homoputzoafus) and be sure to check out my new mixtape "supreme pizza: legend of the modelfucker" available dec 16th on itunes!
