I agree that everyone took a shit all over your thread, but I'm not sure I agree that Joel McHale making fun of the Kardashians was quite as far afield of the mainstream as you're making it out to be. My parents liked it.
dude don't get me wrong.... it's not like i'm all "WHAT THE FUCK?!?! HOW CAN YOU GUYS SHIT ON MY THREAD ABOUT THE SOUP?!!?" cuz like i said i'm a believer that if there's a tangent there to be explored you go and explore it, and kind of like family members you're just glad to see 28 replies even if a few of them make you exhale, conceptually speaking.
it's just that this is a perfect representation of why the soup is going away. the admittedly-stupid name never had any brand recognition / market penetration beyond the niche-at-best group of ppl who watched it, and then the name is SOOOO DUMB when you bring up "the soup" it traditionally invites people to drop their best witticisms about actual soup.
not to mention that the show is on the E! network, and if you told me that the E! network is a conspiracy to destroy our culture through pandering to the lowest common denominations of, say, humanity collectively rubbernecking a car-crash of degeneracy--- i'd probably believe you by default. this is a network whose main exec used to fuck chelsea handler so they handed her a 7 figure salary and a talk show because that's just how they roll cuz hey, if it worked for les moonves / julie chen how could it NOT work for the visionaries at E!?"
so yah TLDR = niche show for niche people and while it always WAS a pretty-much self-aware little shit of a show that knew its place and used to have fun with it, it lost its soul when it started pandering to low-level-celebs to have them on every week in a quest to bring in new viewers (ironically through tangents) and then it had to force like 1/3 or 1/2 of every episode to work in guest gags/bits/etc. when you're taking a considerable portion of the show content to go LOOK IT'S A FAMOUS PERSON! THAT'S RIGHT WE'RE COOL WITH FAMOUS PEOPLE AND LOOK AT THEM HAM IT UP!!!!! yeah man, a niche show that barely has any ratings is only going to shoot itself in the foot when it waters down its content in the name of starfucking like its audience would rather see a famous/ish person than have another quality joke/riff.
