I agree with Nas that it was a bad matchup, and Hakeem is a top 10 all time guy, but Jordan never lost in the Finals. I wouldn't bet against him, would you?

In 94-95?

Perhaps

When Shaq beat him

Not Hakeem or Shaq's fault that MJ was mentally weak for a couple years.

You know who didn't take 2 years off at the end of his prime to heal his body? Kobe. Jordan lacked the same will to win that Kobe had. Kobe played with a bad finger and shoulder. Jordan retired after cutting his hand cutting a cigar.

Yeah, that is the one thing he didn't steal from Jordan and do worse.

I would roll with Duncan at his peak over Shaq though it's a tough call. Kobe is a non starter. I don't take Kobe over Grant Hill or McGrady in their prime. Before the injuries he didn't want to see either of those guys. Only thing he has on them is longevity as an individual player.

Yikes! More terrible Kobe hate.

Couldn't touch either one of these two at the height of their careers. Unfortunately the height of each career was rather fleeting. Injuries did both McGrady and Grant Hill in. They had a large enough sample size to suggest that they were not flash in the pans though. It all came down to health. Talent wise they would have taken the black mamba out.

I can give you Hill but McGrady was only a scorer and he was a loser. He was never a better player than Kobe. Hill would have been an all time great.

I think what hurt a number of those guys during that era was philosophy more than anything. I sort of attribute this to Jordan. A number of the 2 guard/3 men seemed to embrace the one man band style of basketball. High school to the pro's had something to do with it also. They believed that they could win simply because of the talent that they possessed. There were a number of me first guys during that pd and they all seemed to play either the 2 guard or small forward positions. There were some world class chuckers during this era.

I attribute it to Jordan because the perception held by some was that the Bulls were comprised of Jordan and the Jordannaires. While Pippen will always be #2 he was still an important part of the team.

Kobe
Vince
McGrady
Jalen Rose
Allen Iverson

To name but a few were all guys that believed they could win simply because of the greatness that they personally possessed.

No one was as bad as Kobe or Iverson when it came to this sort of thing. Vince and Mcgrady could have conformed with better players, the other two nope

I know you wish I could place Etwaun Moore in this particular class, but it aint going to happen.

You'd be better served not referencing something you are currently wrong about.

T Mac was the best player in history for about 35 seconds. Kobe has him beat on longevity.

Tim Duncan, "Mr. Fundamental." Came into the league with a solid all-around game, has become smarter in playing the game, his current team is still a contender with him in the line-up.

Kevin Garnett, got a friend of mine fired because he didn't give a crap about who he thought he was, in his eyes he was still a high school freshman (more on this later, maybe*).

Its not always about stats but how well they play the game. Do they make the smart plays? Do they know how to play defense and exploit situations (beyond simple shot blocking). Do they show up and play the other aspects of the game when the ball isn't dropping? Can they allow others to have their moments in the game? In the season? Are they considered a leader by ther teammates and not appointed a leader by some nebulous media criteria? Do they back up their teammates on the floor? Can they play the heel? Can they take a shot, get up, and take another, get up...and so on? Can they make a free throw?

I'm not belittling Garnett, a truly phenomenal talent when he left high school. But I've admired Duncan's game as being near flawless in nearly all aspects. Its not just the simple stats of P/A/R but other stats that don't always show up on a card. Too much of basketball, the NBA in particular, is focused on individuals and their specific accomplishment. I attribue this to NBA marketing and too many hours playing video games. EA and 2K know that if a rookie player can't score points that they will put the game down, so the game focuses on the ability to score. The NBA has changed the rules to take out much of the physiciality that dominated the game some 12-20 years ago. So I look at the game much differently now, and probably much different than most. You got a guy who can score 60? I'll defend the other 4, make his ass work on defense, and beat you by 7. Unless my players think that they can score enough to make it a sprint race.

The coach at Farragut who was asked to step aside wouldn't bend on his philosphy about freshmen or how he ran his team. He still holds the record for rebounds at ISU and no, he isn't some 6-8 beast (but his brother was).

Garnett was only a Farragut for his senior year of high school. He came from out of state.

You are correct. I called up my friend after posting this just to check in on him so i didn't have a chance to correct until now (having my car serviced #DiscountTires).
