Rambo: New Blood
Posted December 1 2015 — 11:03 AM EST

First a new Rocky movie knocking out most box office rivals last weekend, now this: Fox is developing a Rambo TV series with Sylvester Stallone.

The script deal is for a series titled Rambo: New Blood, which “pays homage to the original Rambo films, [and] will explore the complex relationship between Rambo and his son, J.R., an ex-Navy SEAL.”

Stallone would reprise his role as a buffed-out Vietnam War veteran and former Green Beret with a very special set of skills.

Stallone and Avi Lerner are executive producers on the project with Jeb Stuart (Die Hard) as showrunner. The move comes on the heels of Stallone’s Rocky franchise spin-off Creed opening to 42.1 million over Thanksgiving weekend and generating Oscar buzz for Stallone.

It’s been a while since Stallone has played the iconic Reagan-era character — the fourth and most recent Rambo film (titled simply Rambo) was made in 2008.

It's like your grandparents having a garage sale. Stallone is getting rid of classic characters to the highest bidder. That's why Creed was written by someone other than Sly. He had 2 things that made his career and he is pedaling those things. He got lucky with Creed but a Rambo TV show?...NO!

It turns out the planned “Rambo” television series wasn’t Sylvester Stallone’s war after all.

Less than a week after reports surfaced that the Hollywood veteran would reprise his big-screen role in Fox’s “Rambo: New Blood,” his representatives tell Deadline that’s not the case. It turns out he won’t even serve as an executive producer.

The website states that without Stallone’s involvement, the project is unlikely to move forward.

The drama was to center on the complex relationship between John Rambo and his son J.R., an ex-Navy SEAL.

Stallone co-wrote and starred in the 1982 action film “First Blood,” based on David Morrell’s 1972 novel of the same name about a misunderstood Vietnam War veteran who must use his skills to survive an abusive small-town sheriff. The film spawned three sequels: 1985’s “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” 1988’s “Rambo III” and 2008’s “Rambo.”
