Forget the theory that Jeff Samardzija will be the bargain of the offseason. Teams talking with him say he's claiming to have $100M on table

IMU wants him if they can get him for $4.5 million a year for 3 years.

If my math is right it would take 2005 years to pay off a $100m+ deal for Samardzija at $4.5 per.

$100mil?

That seems extreme...

He'll be 31 in January...Could someone really be offering him $20mil over 5 years?

Of course he is.....I wouldnt trust Sharks camp for my life on this one. They have focused on this time for 4 years now? They will negotiate this to the last $.

In this stupid crazy pitching market, its not all that extreme. Didn't the Cubs offer him ~$80mil over 6 years or something? And that was a few years ago. $100mil for Shark seems a bit extreme on the surface, but it actually might be what the market is for him....as unreal is that seems.

If he has $100mil on the table...he should take it and run...unless it was for something like 8 years and he thinks he can still pull another decent contract in 4-5.

I hope not. He has always had the tools to be a top of the rotation pitcher, but has always lacked the ability to maintain focus and make quality pitches in key situations. Instead, he resorts back to just trying to throw harder and gets in more trouble. He has a career ERA over 4. They need another pitcher capable of winning big games in the postseason and while he has shown the ability to rise to the occasion and pitch outstanding games, he is not someone I trust. He's a back of the rotation guy and those guys should not get big money. A 9 million dollar a year deal like Hammell got would be as high as I can see going. Even then, I don't want him. Much rather have Leake, or Lackey. Lackey might be had for less money and on a shorter deal for sure .

I wouldn't use Cubs as any kind of barometer.

Cubs foolishly offered 5\75 ... They also offered Edwin Jackson 52 million for 4 years.. Both are the same guy, bad ..

The Giants are going to pay him $45mil, and Barry Zito is going to pay him $45mil. That way both guys will have stolen roughly an equal amount of money from the Giants.

So they dont give him the extra years that would extend the tail end of his contract to the TV windfall, where supposedly the $18m wouldnt be that big of a deal. Then Theo says that the Cubs were involved with Price but "weren't in a position to sign him." And supposedly the front office is looking at this as a two-year window.

I thought the plan was to suck for a half-decade, build up a bunch of cheap young talent and fill in the gaps with expensive top-of-the-line free agents. The latter being enabled by not paying the former much money at all. Instead its 37 year old John Lackey and Wei-Yin Chen while not only the Price's, Grienke's and Zimmermann's go elsewhere, but even Jeff Samardzija after a brutal 2015 proves too expensive.

Might want to check on Tom, maybe he really wasn't cut out for this kind of stuff.

Cubs offer to Price was creative at 7-$161 million third to Boston and St Louis .They liked Samardzija but did not offer 5 year deal.

What's creative about it? Did they fingerpaint it?

I thought it meant he got to keep creative control over his character. /s

I'm assuming that definitely involves deferred payments and maybe some bonuses?

Being nearly $60m behind the winning bid is the definition of "not being in a position to sign him."

The contract paper was cut into the shape of a heart.
