If Greinke indeed was chasing absolute top dollar, he escapes California's 13.3% top tax rate. Arizona at just 4.54%.

~9% of $200 million is not pennies.

Love the Samardzija signing for San Fran. It's really a perfect fit. Mildly surprised he got that 5th year but not shocked. He's going to do great things pitching in that park. Bumgarner, Zija and Peavy. I may have to buy a San Fran hat.

A pitcher 14 games under .500 gets you excited? Then you must get hard looking at Hillary

I couldn't care less about his w/l record.

Figures...he's a loser....look how he helped the A's out. Only one pitcher in the HOF with a losing record...so wins must mean something!

Someone gave a career 14 games under, plus 4 ERA 90 million to pitch. I can't quite get spankys head around that

And that doesn't count because Paige had a huge winning record over his entire career. His "losing record" only encompasses his big league service when he was about 50 years old.

There is no great starting pitcher with a losing record. The best one you can find is probably Mark Gubicza.

That's the conventional wisdom in baseball these days and the precise reason why GMs will continue to overpay turds like Samardzija.

Not good. Bannister is a great example of a guy from his time who was like Samardzija or Javy Vazquez. He had all the stuff in the world. He just wasn't a very good pitcher. He did kick ass in the second half in 1983 though.

The Orioles resigned RHP Darren O'Day to a 4yr/$31M deal and the A's signed RHP Ryan Madson to a 3yr/$22M deal.

Both guys are setup men. O'Day is 33 and Madson is 35 and coming off multiple arm injuries. Suddenly David Robertson's 3yr/$36M deal isn't looking so bad.

It never did look BAD. Now it looks pretty GOOD.

Dodgers talking to Reds about Chapman.

Why would they make that deal? Jansen is a real good closer.

Maybe they think they can make him a starter. There was talk of that in Cincinnati.

Also teams continue to try and build super Bullpens. Although that kind of lends itself to mid season moves.

Smardjia will be interesting to watch. I agree with most that he's not worth that kind of money, but I think he's a better pitcher than we saw with the White Sox.

The Lackey deal is safe. A lot of money, but 2 years is recoverable. Should be interesting to see what's next.

Still seems like an odd deal to me.

Why would you give up some prospects for a one year rental on a closer when you already have one of the best closers in the game?

I get the whole super bullpen thing going on right now...

But I am not sure either guys ego will work well with having both guys in the pen.

Maybe they look to move him to rotation like JORR said.

Dodgers are officially now the Yankees with their payroll.

They might as well sell out and go for it every year with that climate.

They need to win the WS to justify the incredible payrolls over the last five years.
