I'm a little itchy on this coupled with signing a 34 yr old for 4 years.

Everyone needs to remember every team MUST have a representative for the all star team so frankly, Castro had maybe 1 AS worthy season.

Good player but not Paul Molitor and he was a mental error waiting to happen

Low baseball IQ.

Not funny in the clubhouse either.

at his worst as a fielder, he is better than Zobrist at his best

Castro is better than baseball at Zobrist, warts and all.

Enjoy Ben Archuletta.

Figured this was coming, still makes me sad. Other than Baez, the was the last evidence that Jim Hendry and his barrel existed. Really hope he excels in New York.

That said, the team is better today with Zobrist/Warren than just Castro.

Funny how during the last 2 seasons so many wanted Castro gone. Trade him for a bag of balls.

Then the Cubs trade him. And the trade and signing put them in a better position that most would have expected, and yet some are still irritated.

I always liked Castro and was pleased with how he handled his transition to 2B and how he played down the stretch. I am sad to see him go, but I do believe that this next year they will be in a better position with Zobrist and Warren.

I am curious where they go next. Do they try to get another pitcher? Do they go after Heyward?

Castro can hit, but I've never thought much of him defensively. The Cubs had a log jam at middle infield. Not to overvalue Zobrist, but this nets as an upgrade factoring in Zobrist and Warren.

This morning, King Lisp Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce referred to Castro as playing all-star caliber 2B down the stretch. How this fuckstick continues to be employed amazes me.

Statistics tell the opposite story. You either have some bad info or misunderstood something.

And Im no Castro hater.

Zobrist has had a higher OPS and UZR every year since Castro began. Even at SS Zobrist is better defensively.

Well, Castro did have at least a month stretch where he was one of the hottest hitters in baseball. I don't think that's too much of a stretch.

There are a shit load of guys like Warren that are free agents. This trade and signing doesn’t make the Cubs better.

Really? Are you saying Castro is better than Zobrist? Because that's quite a stretch.

Correct. The last month of the season he has a 1000+ OPS. Bruce is a pud, but he was one of the best players in baseball during that time.

I don't think it's a stretch at all to say over the next 3 years that Castro will be a better player than Zobrist.

What are you basing that on? It's either a decline in Zobrist or an improvement in Castro. I like Castro, but I think the days of him hitting above .300 consistently are over. And even if he manages to do so, he's unlikely to get on base as much as Zobrist. Plus, Zobrist is clearly a better fielder at multiple positions.

From a strict baseball perspective, I don't see much downside for the Cubs in swapping Castro out for Zobrist. If you want to consider other factors, like "The Cubs Way" and how Castro and Rizzo are the original centerpieces of this slow rebuilding process, the guys who sufferend through the 90+ loss seasons only to see Castro replaced by a guy who is from "the Maddon Way" rather than "the Cubs Way", well it might be a mistake. That was one of the big issues they've had in Washington and a real problem if you're getting guys to buy into a "Way" only to replace them with guys from outside the "Way" who hit a little better.

Going forward yes. Zobrist will dramatically decline/get injured over the next couple of years and Castro will likely improve.

I don't really agree with any of that. I don't know why you'd think a 25-year old 3-time All-Star's best days are behind him. He had a poor 2015 but came on very strong for the final 2 months offensively. I don't think he's a .300 consistently guy but I could see him at .280 and the odd year of .300+.

Zobrist is certainly going to decline and I'm not convinced he's a clearly better fielder.

This is a next year move. I understand and it may prove to work next year. But, long-term, 2+ years, you'd be better off with Castro.

That said, I don't think this moves the meters dramatically one way or the other. It's kind of a meh to me.

Actually, there are some signs that Zobrist is in decline right now, but he's still very likely to give you at least the next three seasons at around 120 OPS+. That would be close to a career season for Castro. And if we look at WAR, Zobrist's worst is similar to Castro's best.

I don't look at Castro like a regular guy who you can see developing. He was arguably better in his first season than he's been since. I don't see him as a guy like Heyward, who I expect to explode and have his best seasons in the next two years, even though they're about the same age.

I believe Zobrist will be a more valuable player to the Cubs than Castro would have been for next season and maybe even two seasons. By that point, Zobrist value, due to age, will likely be plummeting and then Cubs will have a very expensive bench option. Hopefully the Baez/Torres' of the world continue to develop and you have cost controlled, cheap everyday players to offset 12m+ on the bench.
