Castro can hit, but I've never thought much of him defensively. The Cubs had a log jam at middle infield. Not to overvalue Zobrist, but this nets as an upgrade factoring in Zobrist and Warren.

This morning, King Lisp Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce referred to Castro as playing all-star caliber 2B down the stretch. How this fuckstick continues to be employed amazes me.

Well, Castro did have at least a month stretch where he was one of the hottest hitters in baseball. I don't think that's too much of a stretch.

Correct. The last month of the season he has a 1000+ OPS. Bruce is a pud, but he was one of the best players in baseball during that time.

He was referring to his DEFENSE.

What are you basing that on? It's either a decline in Zobrist or an improvement in Castro. I like Castro, but I think the days of him hitting above .300 consistently are over. And even if he manages to do so, he's unlikely to get on base as much as Zobrist. Plus, Zobrist is clearly a better fielder at multiple positions.

I don't really agree with any of that. I don't know why you'd think a 25-year old 3-time All-Star's best days are behind him. He had a poor 2015 but came on very strong for the final 2 months offensively. I don't think he's a .300 consistently guy but I could see him at .280 and the odd year of .300+.

Zobrist is certainly going to decline and I'm not convinced he's a clearly better fielder.

This is a next year move. I understand and it may prove to work next year. But, long-term, 2+ years, you'd be better off with Castro.

That said, I don't think this moves the meters dramatically one way or the other. It's kind of a meh to me.

everything you said, Dr. Ken, is what I was trying to type earlier today. The move doesn't mesh with a long window viewpoint...it meshes with a win next year and suck the next three move, a Lester-type move. I am a Zobrist fan...I just think Starlin will get better. He's only 25. Why would you think his best days are behind him? And he's cost controlled.

I think the quick and ostensibly obvious take on this is why trade a 25 year old with potential upside for a 35 year old vet with significant potential for downside. It's the leading logical though. Hell I'm an unapologetic Castro detractor but I don't quite know how to react to what essentially boils down to trading Castro for Warren & Zobrist.

On the other hand, I don't offhand recall any Cubs GM making a calculated (I presume) trade to win a WS that wasn't either getting a name free agent or fleecing a small-market team offering crumbs for meat. Making piddly moves and trades here and there, sure, but not often under the banner of "we want to win immediately". It's possible this feels peculiar because the situation around the moves is unusual.

People here and abroad are treating this, it seems, like it's a big-deal type move. Maybe it's just moving some pieces around trying to get a little bit better - fine-tuning rather than overhauling.

Is this Theo shitting the bed. It might be.

Is this Theo being the super genius he's purported to be? It could be.

What it is, however, is premature to make any pronouncement one way or the other, really not a ton different than judging a draft class the day after they're picked.

The fact of the matter is Castro is a good young player but also a guy who is owed 38M+ for the next 4 years so yea in 3 or 4 years he should be outperforming Zobrist but after that, assuming he is performing well, he will be a free agent and want more cash.

So the bottom line is he is a commodity that has been dealt and in the eyes of Maddon and the front office, this improves the team in the short term and thus they made the deal and the signing.

I think this would have worth the risk for Hahn to have traded a good reliever like Nate Jones for the potential of Castro at a position of desperate need. Try him back at SS.

I think some are suggesting the possibility that in another three years Zobrist's and Castro's WARs could be more or less reversed.

oh, I think we're more than suggesting.

Theo is supposed to give position player contracts based on future projection, not on past performance.

You can show those stats but that should have nothing to do with Theo's decision.

There is also a chance that the Castro of the first 5 months of 2015 will be the real Castro and he will become a journeyman and/or out of baseball.

Hold it Chachi, dont go over board.

Future projections are largely based on stats of the past

Castro @ second is still a liability.. I'm OK with the trade, I'd rather have moved Baez and Keep Castro tho. I could see Castro playing for another 12 + years and getting 3k hits.. That's the rub with him.. He can't walk and he's not very quick and he's a really dumb base runner.
