If you look at the history of the game, the ethnic group with the lowest socioeconomic status usually stood out. It began in the early days with the Irish. Then you had the Italians. Once blacks could play in the big leagues, they began to dominate. To the point where the leagues became lopsided due to the overall reluctance of the AL to sign these players and the NL's quicker embrace of them. Unlike the Irish and the Italians, black people have been held as a sort of permanent immigrant class. But once the game became global, there were new underclasses in places like the Dominican and Cuba. Add to that the popularity of other sports, and it's kind of natural what has happened.

I don't think we need to socially engineer the game. Sure, I would like more black guys to play, and more white guys, and I'd like baseball to become the national game of France and Iraq too. The more people who play, the better the big league game is going to be. But I don't think it's something over which to wring one's hands.
