I'm gonna be surprised if they sign Heyward. I'm guessing there is going to be a Lackey and or Shark and trades.

Someone needs to play CF. Maybe it comes from a trade. Maybe they surprise and re-sign Fowler. I'm not against that, depending on cost. Fowler's offensive production is pretty similar to Heyward. The defense isn't close though.

I'd be shocked if they signed Heyward.

He should get at least 6/120 which may be fair value but his defense will regress and his bat is far from guaranteed.

I'd pass.

Right now, they've got a lineup of mashers. For the most part I love them...but...can you really rely on nothing but power hitting? They need some "small ball" types. Can Baez lead off and run the bases? Doubtful. Addison Russell?

They have zero speed in the lineup. Even Fowler wasn't particularly good at getting on base and moving up.

I don't really see Heyward bringing the baserunning prowess they need.

Right now I see their Achilles Heals being the back end of the rotation/bullpen and the ability to get guys on base early in innings who can make themselves a threat on the base paths.

I'd get a defensive specialist, probably LH as they can always throw Szczur in there vs. LH's as they await/evaluate Almora. There is even talk of Baez looking slick in CF depending on how Castro trade scenarios play out.

Doesn't solve the leadoff situation though. And I don't think the Cubs should be in the business of jigsawing a team together. #WeAreGood ... make shrewd moves. The Cubs don't need to evaluate players in 2016. They need to continue winning.

They are set. No need to worry. Pitching is easy to find so they will be able to get that whenever they want

Decent article. Red Sox are fucked.

Also, the Red Sox outbid the Cardinals by $30M. $27M per year versus $31M a year. That was a much better number, even though 7 guaranteed still seems ridiculous.

These reactions are predictable.

We should work up both possible Heyward reactions now to save time

Dead on.

Very predictable.

A little surprised to hear of the Cards being 2nd for Price. That does not seem like a move they make.

Denard Span is the answer to the CF and leadoff problems. He should be someone they can get on a shorter term deal coming off hip surgery. Then add a guy like Leake or Lackey and perhaps make a deal for yet another pitcher via a trade.

Depends on Span's health and price. He seems like an injury waiting to happen.

Just find a guy who is a shut down CF and upgrade the defense. Who cares what he hits...

Not just for Cubs but I still do not get the Heyward love. He is good but not some superstar that should command all this huge cash IMHO.

About twice as much as Rosenthal said was doable.

Your team had to build a mall in the outfield to get people through the game.

Brick's strategic decision to jettison from the White Sox and engage the Cubs as a guerilla combatant is proving very effective.

I did it just after the Sox won the offseason last year too so no one can complain.

I'll have to check with the Schaumburg contingent around here, but "mall" might be a bit much. I will grant you that modified beer garden may be more apropos. But, on the south side, the game actually matters. We can't all corner the market on buffalo burgers, crap beer & the Trixies. :)
