Cubs are believed to have gotten heyward for less than $200M. Apparently taking less to be at addison and clark.
Just to tie this up, he didn't take less.

He got pretty much what he was asking for.

He took less money overall but more per year I believe.

The last time a Chicago baseball GM won the offseason....it was not good. Not to say that the Cubs are going to lose 90 games, but still. Anything short of a World Series title is a big time failure. #INQUISITOR

This is the most optimism I've seen in Chicago since we got Jay Cutler.

I'm waiting to explain the Cubs fans they just gave the offensive equivalent of Adam Eaton an 8 year contract with a player opt out after 3.

I am having a hard time getting super excited about signing an old pitcher, effectively exchanging Castro for Zobrist, and then overpaying for a .270 career hitter without significant power. I love the Cubs as much as anybody, but why should I be doing a World Series Dance with this offseason?

I gave Hahn tons of kudos for his off season last year, and I loved the Eaton move. That aside, Heyward got a massive contract so the standard for Heyward has to be different than Eaton.

Fowler had a better year. Cubs just got a little worse for a lot more money

Eaton was the worst player on an absolutely horrible Sox team the first two months of last year. Always shocked to see his numbers finish as well as they did.

but Heyward is a gold glove defender...just not at the position the Cubs will play him

I would hope the Sox put Trace in CF everyday and move Eaton to a corner....

Unless they are terrible, yes. The Cubs carry the same risk as your normal 8 year contract (which is substantial) but wall themselves off from reaping full benefit if it goes well.

Right, because that would make sense

I am made to understand that, with respect to Heyward batting leadoff, (a) he hasn't done all that well at it, and (b) isn't terribly innerested in doing it.

Im just being anti CoF

I do believe he would be good, but Zobrist is fine too.

Zobrist would be a-ok with me.

Zobrist kinda slow to be in one hole IMO.. I'm not crazy about the BZ deal.

I don't get the hype. Heyward is a good player, but this isn't franchise-changing, IMO. His offensive numbers are average.

That said, I don't dislike the deal because the nature of the game now is you have to pay big money to land free agents. But this isn't like signing Mike Trout. The Bernsteins of the world are over their skis.

Zobrist is old, I think he's an upgrade this season over Castro..but after that..Castro will have more value and will be making about 35% less.. Its a risky move and I don't like it.

In a vacuum, sure.

But the Cubs needed reliable top of the order hitters. Fowler was decent at that, but had issues defensively, and would go into slumps.

Heyward and Zobrist as 1-2 would be much more consistent at the top of the order, and will help balance the Cubs' offense. Heyward will help defensively, as Zobrist would over Castro. (But maybe not compared to Baez).

This move doesn't need to be signing Trout. The Cubs won 97 games and were in the NLCS.

And what doesn't need to be said is that Heyward could still get even better.

Well, if Heyward can get better then I guess that Adam Eaton might turn into the next Willie Freakin' Mays!

  Baseball offseason moves are great for this place. Cubs pay $180 million for essentially Adam Eaton with better defense, and everyone loves it.

Disagree.. I think its very likely to happen..he's young and he's going to see a lot of strikes with that lineup sandwiched around him.

Adam Eaton can also get better, yes. Adam Eaton is a few years behind Heyward. He will have his chance to leave the White Sox and get paid too.
