It's going to be sweet when those two supplemental picks the Cardinals get from the Cubs for these signings stick daggers in the warm and fuzzy north side team in the near future

Remember the first tenant of The(o) Plan as it pertains to free agency is to only pay for future production. Lackey and Zobrist is clearly paying for past production. Heyward is paying for a future production level he had never achieved.

At least he's no racist. Or minimally not as racist as Cubs fans. That's over the line.

This is a very astute observation and one I believe is accurate. 184 million for Heyward? You gotta be bleepin' me. Falling right line, but it's The Plan so it's all right on schedule...except when it's a year early or late or whatever.

It's probably more like a very expensive 3-year contract where the annual value drops to the point that he's going to opt-out at 29 unless he completely tanks.

Oh, according to my sources.

My source is a calculator.

Well said my ass. Heyward never had protection like this in a line-up. It's the BIG BLUE MACHINE!

One Hendry-like move and Pasta is back....FULL FORCE !!!!

But you can't really argue the Lackey and Zobrist point. That is all past performance.

I disagree most with Lackey. If he was dropping in velocity and his ERA was climbing, that would make sense. But he has maintained velocity in the mid 90's and had a 2.77 ERA in 2015, when he was 9th in Cy Young voting. He is a nice upgrade as a #3. The fact that he has a proven level of excellent performances in the post-season, including 2 World Series clinching wins and a win VS the Cubs in the NLDS just this past season, is just proof that big games are no issue for him and that he is someone capable of handling those situations well.

I already corrected Frank in another thread. There is no way you can argue Lackey is paying for past performance.

He is being paid what a #3 gets in Free Agency and he only got two years. Completely reasonable and matches up with his projections of the next two years.

Either way, you guys seem to have this hyperfocus on things Theo said and whether he sticks to them as if it matters? Its all results. And you guys act like you've never heard GM speak before. Of course no one could live up to never paying for past performance.

Hendry would have gotten Price and Heyward for 10 years each for a total of 600 million and two full no trades.

They were wrong last season, and they'll be wrong again. Don't worry about it. I love the fact that JORR, gd and Frank can identify 20 things wrong with the Cubs and we're still the team of the decade. Things will be grand.

No.

If Lackey got 3-4 years and was being paid like a 1-2 THAT would be paying for past performance as that was the kind of guy he has been in the past

Signing him for 2 years at a 2-3 starter price is exactly what the market should be for him and would line up with projections for the next two years.

Zobrist is probably paying for the past but he'll likely be good for 3 of the 4 years anyway.

"matches his projections"

The reasonable projection for a 37 year old is a very big decrease in production.

Obviously, OBP is "good" in a vacuum, but how you arrive at it is a different discussion. The Royals are making a case against the fetishization of the walk and taking pitches for the sake thereof.

Strikeouts are "bad" in a vacuum.
