I always over think signings my team makes when they are a big market team in a sport without a salary cap.

No salary cap doesn’t mean unlimited money.

No salary cap doesn’t mean unlimited money.

It's the Cubs. So it kind of does.

If true, then price would be in cubbie pinstripes

Also, they didn't have the highest total dollar amount offers to either Zobrist or Heyward

Why is it so important to point that out?

So NOW the Cubs didn't offer the most. Which is it?

What are the chances one of Almora/McKinney/Happ/Other comes in and takes the CF job in Spring Training? These guys are all 21+...except for "Other" of course.

No chance.

First of all, only Almora is a true centerfielder. Secondly, Theo and Jed stress the importance of AAA at-bats, and none of them have been to AAA at all. Happ hasn't even been to high-A yet. Furthermore, the Cubs aren't going to throw an untested rookie into a starting role on opening day.

Baez has a 100x better chance of being the Cubs starting CF on Opening Day than any of those 3.

Which contract offered to Jason Heyward was the most expensive to a team? An answer with solely the team name would suffice.

They'd bring Almora up after two weeks to have an extra year of indentured servitude to the Cub.

I don't know whether the other two teams offered him opt outs and front loading so I cannot accurately answer the question.

Well, you seem to think that an opt-out has a monetary value. So go ahead and tell me what an opt-out costs the Cubs?

a player?

That will be determined in 3 years, at which time it will be a fairly simple calculation.

Cheaper than Samardiza and better, 60 million less guaranteed. I don't understand how anyone could have a beef with this signing.

They're not paying for the past. Any projection of the next two years would have Lackey as a 3ish pitcher and that's about how much they cost in free agency.

If by 3ish, you mean a 3-4, you are correct. He isn't in the group of rag tags that make up the fifth spot for the overwhelming majority of the league

I think he outperforms Lester this year.

Lackey had a Samardzija season at about the same age.

Dude pitched in the A.L. for a decade in the steroid era, the Guppy lasted one season with the worst era in mlb. I'd set the over-under for Lackey this season @ 205 innings pitched
3.12 ERA .

You're a little optimistic, I think.

180-190 IP, 3.40 ERA.

Still curious if there was ever a point to this post.
