I hope the Sox can pull of Cespedes. Baseball would truly be #1 in chicago for at least the next several seasons...with both clubs having good teams.

But that was one year...and while both teams were excellent...the Cubs had the best shot at a World Series but no visions of long term success. Their best players were on the down sides of their careers. And the Sox were good but I don't think they were thought of as contenders.

With Sale, Abreu, Quintana, Frazier, Cespedes, Eaton, and a new backstop tandem...they could be good for the next few years.

Boy there's a lot of smoke out there about Cespedes to the Sox. If this happens I hope they give him an opt out clause after every season. Cespedes needs that carrot in front of him. No carrot. No thank you.

December 29th @9:40pm, my oldest son & I now have had an unexpected 30 minute discussion about the White Sox & Nationals rosters, the HOF ballot, the Giants pitching staff, Bartolo & Cespedes.

Seven (ish) weeks until pitchers & catchers report, and D1 teams start to play ball?!? Can't wait!

And I've got the New Years Six + a title game to take up the next two weeks? Happiness!

Here ya go buddy..... I will write the dissenting opinon as many of you do on any Cubs moves

by signing either guy KHAHN is admitting that either the Peavy deal for Avasil (they should have taken Iglesias the SS) or the Melky signing (still owe him 29 mil over the next two years) was a mistake... if the Cubs did this the entire subdivision would be pointing this out..... YOU would also point out that Gordon will be 32 next year and if he gets a 5 year deal for 105 mil you'd be paying for an old guy who's skills should be in decline... or YOU would be sure to mention that Cespedes who will be 30 next year made 10.5 mil last year and he will surely want BIG money somewhere around 6 tears at 140 mil (paying another old declining player)BUT since the Sox are a destination maybe he gives them the Hetward/Zobrist discount and signs for less.

Now the honest unbiased baseball fan view...I'd rather have Upton (younger only 28 next year) and he would probably take 7 years at 147 with an opt out... KC already told Gordon they won't pay him so he is out of the division and I don't think he brings the Upton upside. I think Cespedes is my second choice and like that he has no compensation.... any one of them improves the defense which is sorely needed..... and I would take anyone of them...they are ALL better than what Robin was forced to trot out there game after game last year. Signing any is a GREAT move.

I am pretty sure they could not pull off getting Iglesias in the deal, which is part of the reason the Red Sox were brought in. However, remember that Montas also came in the Peavy trade, so Frazier is a result of that deal. It was definitely not a mistake.

The Melky signing is a bit of a mistake. However, a Cespedes deal is a repudiation of the LaRoche contract, not the Cabrera contract.

I am hoping a Cespedes deal only costs 5 and $100. Maybe I am misreading the market.

I'm thinking Cespedes AAV is more like $23M or so...up to $25M. Not sure which teams are still involved though...and Gordon and Upton also being available does sort of saturate the market.

I think that would have been his original asking price but no one jumped at it. Who knows? Maybe he was asking for more than Heyward and everyone balked and is now coming back at your estimate. The Heyward contract alone should give him a ceiling of 23 and a floor of several million less

I figured the max years would be where Cespedes will be disappointed but you may be right. Interesting to see....I do still hope the Sox pull in one of the three though. Unless these guys are truly asking for stupid deals. (I know the KCR offer was lowball...but Alex Gordon also seems to be asking for the world?) I'm sure the extra Heyward got for defensive prowess isn't helping teams sign Gordon.

I would love Cespedes or Gordon, but even with one of them I'm not sure if the lineup still makes sense.

1 Eaton CF
2 Abreu 1B
3 Cespedes/Gordon LF
4 Frazier 3B
5 Cabrera RF
6 Lawrie 2B
7 LaRoche DH
8 Avila/Navarro C
9 Saladino SS

There's some obvious problems there. I know it's natural to go into the season with some question marks, but Melky in RF, no typical #2 hitter, LaRoche at DH and Saladino at SS probably has a few question marks too many.

If the Sox can manage to dump LaRoche and use that money to find a RF who can at least play defense (never mind the Sox had a guy who could do exactly that and dealt him for Frazier) I'm a lot more confident. Problem is $20m+ AAV to Cespedes or Gordon probably maxes out the finances to the point where even a 3rd tier OF is out of the Sox price range.

I'm fine with Saladino at SS if every position other than CF and 1B has been upgraded (the Sox have done a remarkable job of this so far), I'm even fine with letting Avi get some starts in RF and DH just not every day.

I just think even after Cespedes/Gordon the Sox are still going to find themselevs "one move away." Difference being that one move won't need to be of the same magnitude as even the Lawrie trade.

Yea, I like Gordon and I think he'd be real good, but as has been said, Cespedes is a force in the lineup.

As a neutral observer, the White Sox will suck no matter what.

3 Abreu DH
4 Cespedes/Upton RF
5 Frazier 3B
6 Laroche 1B
7 Avila/Navarro C

Melky needs to "train" harder this offseason no doubt. Probably needs to bring Avi with him.

No way in hell the Mets do that deal.

The Sox will end up with Upton.

Upton and Lawrie in the same clubhouse should be fun.

Flores isn't anything great and he is going to be on their bench. He's a middle of the road fielder. He is a batter who gets on base at a low percentage with only slightly better than average power to compensate.

I doubt the trade with the Brewers was a straight Flores for Gomez.

I don't have any idea about their relative values but I do know the Mets have tried to trade him and then paid good money for a fairly pedestrian veteran replacement (actually two replacements if you count the possilbility he could play 2B) all within the past six months.

I don't see JR bucking up for anything important or expensive, They would have to Dump Laroches salary for that to even be a possibility.. Nobody is taking that shitbag.

The Chicago #WhiteSox want to sign free agent OF Alex Gordon or Yoenis Cespedes, but only if they're willing to take 3-year deal or less.
