The official thread.

The speculation, based on Terry's hints, is that Terry is retired after Super Bowl week.

Bernstein might go solo as well.

The answer, of course, is nobody wants to be around Bernstein for 5 hours. But that's trumped by the fact that that person will make more money. Cheap contract to start with the ability to be 6 figures on the 2nd contract if they succeed.

So, the tryouts have already begun!!!! Ranger got a tryout last week. Cowley got one yesterday. Rozner and Rosie have been trying out for years. I'm sure Mitch, as he always does when openings occur, will placate drinking by making him believe he has a shot. But I think by now drinky realizes he has no shot. Or maybe not. Maybe he thinks he's in the race. Who knows?

So now the back room politicing begins amongst the contenders. The twitter campaigns as well. It's gonna be ugly. Somebody might die.

Either Julie DiCaro for our changing world or no official co-host. Probably no official co-host.

So I figure this can be the thread where we grade the parade of co hosts that Bernstein will have over the next month or so.

I mean they might not make that decision until a month or so after Terry retires. Remember how long it took them to pick Mac's replacement? At least a couple months after Mac left I think.

No changes....assuming TB wants to stay there. I just cant imagine a scenario cant be finalized the keep his name on the Bus Boards and have him in Studio once a week, then on the HD Line the rest of it.

I couldnt imagine a better gig for a semi retiree. Make 6 figs, get out of the house 1 day a week, the rest sit in, on a headset and bitch about stuff. Throw in an early bird dinner and some diapers and the guy is the envy of every old dude in the world.

I agree he's dumb to quit. I'd make them kick me out for the reasons you suggested. But how do you explain the constant hints by Terry of retiring for probably over a year now?

Retirement was a all or nothing option at one time, now TB can be on the DSL and/or join around 3:30, when the sun starts setting from his Turlet

I'd say there is a chance of that. Goff desperately wants to run back his warm blanket that is Bernstein. I think it would cure the laughing. I'm being serious.

Cuz Bernstein would drive the show. Which was a mistake to let Goff do so with Spiegel. That's why we get the laughing fits. Bernstein would also direct him away from his stupid "When I was a kid..." or "Yesterday, at the crib, we had pizza and then all of a sudden..." or "This weekend at the club my boy got drunk and the next thing you know..." stories.

Then they can stick Rozner with Spiegel cuz those two guys have a pretty good relationship.

Nah. But funny you say that, had he stayed at the SCORE, he might have gotten it. Bernstein is the one that hired him pretty much. He likes him.

If Joe Orr Road Rod's Shi-cah-go accent is as dick as he's suggested, den der really aint no second choice. I would personally chip in to pay his $67.50/hr wage with the understanding that intentional battery is not covered by liability insurance.

Having DiCarlo or Goff as TB's replacement would be career suicide for Mitch and the Score.

Dan goes national. Not saying it will be successful, but I'm sure he can build a brand around himself and make even more money then he would in this shit market.

I think if your local ratings suck, going national is a fuckin pipe dream.

I once suggested Dan would go to New York, where everything is better than it is here, when the wife and in-laws got tired of Chicago and the realities of CPS started looming large. I wouldn't call it likely, but nor is going national.

Also, Chicago is arguably the best radio market in the country. If we're shit, what's good?

With Boers, he has a bit.

Without him? You can tell he sounds sick of the same stupid Bears storylines. He doesn't like to talk with callers. I just think he knows that its time to get out of this. I am not sure if its possible, but he could be nationally syndicated without leaving Chicago.

Oh, Dan is most definitely tired of doing sports. And why wouldn't he be? He's been doing the same shit for 16 years. It gets old. One dilemma, though, is that most of his value as a compelling talk show host is tied up to his position within the Score's stable of personalities, and as we've gone over time and time again, even that has eroded significantly as North, Fred, Murph, and Doug have given way to Spiegel, Goff, Larry, and Jordan Bernfield. Instead of being the neurotic wiseass who made you realize how stupid sports talk radio really is, now he's just the guy who tells you why you're stupid between other guys who tell you why you're stupid.

The other -- and I'm trying to think of how to explain this without making it sound paradoxical and self-defeating, so work with me here -- is that while his divergences from Chicago sports talk could be hilarious and often the best part of the show, he's also proven not to be as interesting and cerebral on greater-sports/non-sports topics as he may think he is. Remember, for instance, that all the Penn State bluff and bluster ultimately came down to "children being raped: I'm not in favor of it." Some of Dan's other big ideas include that poor people should move, poor people should make more money, unemployed architects make exquisite landscapers, and you should never make fun of a business because they could theoretically buy airtime on your show. It's not what I'd call critical thinking. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that Dan's strength in going beyond sports is mostly rooted in being able to catch you off guard with some funny wordplay or observation rather than any sort of profundity on an array of diverse topics, so without the mind-numbing bullshit of sports as a baseline, it's harder to jump out. It's kind of funny that he's throwing his hat in with Julie, Ramblin' Pizza, and the rest of the identity-politics crowd, because as a well-off middle-class white guy who just wants to pay the mortgage on his gated McRowhouse and send the kids to college, there's no voice that would be lower on the "progressive stack" than his.

I remember back when Dan would fill in for Dan Patrick that I could see enjoying him running a solo show full-time in that format (and I think a lot of the board felt similarly). Those fill-ins obviously were never as fun as B&B at their peak but they were generally well done for a national show and he was pretty professional and an easy listen. Now I'm skeptical that he's even capable of doing that kind of solo show without committing some of the sins that make current B&B largely unlistenable.

I don't disagree. I think he was trying to be Chicago sports TMZ with the Penn State thing. I also think it was funny how he was treated nationally when he tried to break his big leads. That said, I think that is where his next venture will be, successful or not.

I thought if a guy like Dan wanted to go national it would have happened by now. Also I wonder if he's too toxic at this point to attract serious interest even if he wanted to leave.

Obviously that ship has long since sailed. The only talk radio that has a chance of maintaining anything close to its current listenership is sports. I recall Mushberger planting a threat that DB would go to WLS to do straight talk in one of his contract years but he was too much of a dry Caller Bob to try it. Once a big fish in a little pond, always a big fish in a little pond. It's his destiny.

No. The ship has sailed on Bernstein going national. Especially, after a google search, he's all over the internet as being a sexist and a racist. Any national radio show executive is gonna read that shit if they don't know it already know.

The SCORE is really the only place that will have him. That's only if the current management remains.

The way I see it is Dan tries to spread his wings and do big stories while in his tiresome job. The thing is guys on the national scene are many. He may seem like a big deal here but way too many to compete with to try to be Patrick or the king Rome.
