I was at the game last night. I was seated in the bleachers behind Curie's bench. You could hear him tell his team that they didn't need to score anymore. They were up 52-40 with about 5 minutes to go. They were getting any shot they wanted and he wanted them to stall the ball. They didn't do a good job of stalling but it was too early to stall also. They began turning the ball over. It took their aggressiveness away and it allowed Kenwood to find their footing.

I know Mike and I respect him but he was wrong for questioning the kid's toughness.

high school coverage should include nothing more than a report of the game. We should not know the names of high school coaches across this city. I'm even a little reluctant to give the kids as much attention as they receive. ESPN coverage is grotesque in my opinion.

I don't really see a problem with the coverage of high school sports. It has become a business but the exposure that these kids receive has changed the lives of a number of kids. The amount of attention they receive used to bother me, but it doesn't anymore. Without basketball a number of these kids wouldn't be allowed an opportunity to attend college. That's the reality of the situation.

The coverage is reflective of the interest. I attended an elementary school final four tournament last year. Elementary school basketball receives no coverage yet at least 500 people attended the game anyway.

If you want your team to be good, that's what you have to do. I'm not involved in the coaching aspect of it and I don't really attend elementary stuff but I happened to be at a school where this event took place. My point is that they cover it because people are interested.

Is it any creepier than any of the talent shows, world series, or spelling bees that people are so fond of watching?

IIRC, one of the largest crowds ever to watch a football game in Solider Field/Chicago/Illinois was for a CPS Prep Bowl (115-120K) in the 30's. The story of Milan HS is currently being whored out by the NBA with those shitty "Pacers"/alternate uniforms after a "feelgood" movie. "Women's" gymnastics have been dominated by 14-17 yr olds for decades. MLB still loves to bring up the story of the high schooler Bob Feller coming out of the Iowa cornfields & then returning to high school in the 30's. There was national interest in Lew Alcindor @Power Memorial in the mid 60's. Children's birthdates are being tailored to max out HS, LL and travel sports.
