I guess since Ebert passed, this guy's career is floundering. Why would he take a job to be a morning newsreader on FOX? If you put your TV's on right now,you can see him sweating quite a bit and stumbling over the prepared scripting of news events. Quite sad and of course, funny too.

I've never quite understood his talent but he always seems to move up professionally.

He's like the Dave Grohl of Chicago media. I feel like every Foo Fighters record should just have the genric label "ROCK" on it. Well, Roeper is just like a generic "GUY". He's the definition of average. He went to Illinois State, for God's sake!

Title: Forget the radio stations - here are MY top 200 songs
Author: Richard Roeper
Date: September 1, 1996
Section: SHOWCASE
Page: 2

Every Labor Day weekend, more than a few rock stations count down "THE 500 GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIME!"

They also like to do that on Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. I guess it's a good way to give the weekend staff some time off and play a bunch of songs back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Even as you read this, some DJ is saying, "That was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with `Learning to Fly' at No. 332, and before that we heard Music Explosion with `Little Bit of Soul' at No. 333." Coming up, the top 331 songs of ALL TIME."

How they come up with these lists is a mystery to me. What is it that puts "My Sharona" a notch ahead of "Hello Goodbye," but a notch behind "Sussudio"?

Whatever, they always seem to end up with "Hey Jude," "Stairway to Heaven" and "Satisfaction" near the top.

Not me. I like those songs, but I like a bunch of other songs a bunch more.

What I'd like to do on this lazy Labor Day weekend is give you my list of the Top 200 Songs of all time, according to me. My selections are based not on sales, not on critical hipness, not on musical impact. It's just the stuff I like in the order I like it.

You want to take issue with my selections or send me your own list - I'd love to hear from you.

Let the countdown begin.

This was in 1996, so they had to devote actual column inches and actual newsprint to this actual crap. Of course I believe you, Richard Roeper, would think "Cherub Rock" is a better song than "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

"Credence."

White Rabbit is in contention for the worst, most pretentious song of all time.

And Junior's Farm is your highest rated Paul McCartney song? We have different tastes.

Bodeans at number four?

I never liked Roper. Very insipid and he is uncomfortable to gaze at. Kind of a Donny Deutsch vibe mixed with a guy who greets you with an inappropriate shoulder rub.

JORR...I'm beginning to come around on your FF thoughts. I heard their new song the other day and I thought "Damn, this sounds like every other Foo Fighter song". Maybe they need to take a break.

I do like Cornell's new one.

"Congregation"? That one sucks. I bet Richard Roeper likes it, though.

"Nearly forgot my broken heart" is the one I was thinking of. I guess it's not his new one? I'm kind of out of the loop.

This was in 1996, so they had to devote actual column inches and actual newsprint to this actual crap. Of course I believe you, Richard Roeper, would think "Cherub Rock" is a better song than "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

"Credence."

Suspicious Minds is a good choice. Say what you want about late Elvis but he could still bring it into the 70s.

Everything about this clip is mesmerizing from the faces in the crowd to candles on the tables to the buttons on his outfit. The invention of the ironic performance.

"Congregation"? That one sucks. I bet Richard Roeper likes it, though.

Glen Campbell is singing Times Like These on Jules Holland (Palladia) at this very moment.

i don't really care what his music tastes are, but as a critic i always found him severely lacking any real insight or analysis. i don't know why roger chose him other than maybe feeling superior to him (because gene wouldn't let him get away with that). they didn't even have good chemistry together.

Claiming "This Woman's Work" is Kate Bush's best song smacks of pandering: yeah, your wife was pregnant once or twice, I'm sure you respect that a lot and thought this was how you'd show it. Good song but not close to "Running Up That Hill," "Sat In Your Lap," "Cloudbusting," "Babooshka," "Wuthering Heights," "Deeper Understanding," or "Experiment IV," but perhaps I've said too much

I read a great article about the making of From Elvis In Memphis. That was really his last hurrah. Colonel Tom brought Elvis to American Sound to record with Chips Moman. Chips had very specific ideas about what he wanted to do. Colonel Tom thought "In The Ghetto" was too political and he complained about the material and some other stuff that Chips was doing. Chips said, "Look man, I make hits. If you don't want to make hits, you can take the King and get the fuck out of here." Elvis took the Colonel aside and told him everything was going to be okay and that they should give Chips a chance to do his thing.

Roeper is a very slimy dude.
I've heard some stories from the V-triangle that would make Bill Clinton blush.

I'd say "ooh, tell me more," but you know what, don't.
