I'm sure bigfan and others didn't start a thread on this because they were further researching the topic but it has been reported that the Cub contract with CBS radio has already cost an upper level executive his job. I guess this isn't the boon some predicted.

Zimmerman was a budget slasher, not a content builder. He decided to change his stripes just once and it cost him his job.

I guess they didn't know anything about baseball at CBS/Infinity ....I mean how would they have known that baseball is a losing proposition...... Where could they look to see if baseball makes sense...

OH WAIT .....

CBS/Infinity also broadcasts...

Detroit Tigers (WXYT-FM)
New York Mets (WFAN)
New York Yankees (WCBS)
Philadelphia Phillies (WPHT/ WIP-FM)
Pittsburgh Pirates (KDKA-FM)
St. Louis Cardinals (KMOX)

and they could always look at the financial/ratings windfall that the Sox bestowed upon 670 for the past 10 years......

You can bet this wasn't just a local decision......

so, why was it brought up in the reports of Zimmerman losing his job?

The Mets aren't on WFAN any more and WFAN is almost certainly losing money on the Yankees.

No way Rod and Mitch have the sign off resposibility to approve a huge deal with the Cubs. Someone at CBS corporate green lighted this.

CBS had a bit of a falling out with baseball in the previous decade, presumably over internet revenue and CBS not getting any of it. Under instructions from New York to lowball teams or just not negotiate at all, KMOX had to lose the Cardinals and KDKA the Pirates, which in terms of radio heritage are just like WGN losing the Cubs. The Cardinals and KMOX came back to each other with both of their tails tucked, KMOX having lost a lot of its listeners and the Cardinals having launched their own station with roughly the coverage area of a walkie-talkie.

Furthermore, do you remember Bernstein doing a dance over this? I mean he was on his knees sucking off Zimmerman over this 10 year deal in which all of the CBS stations will be involved with Cubs stuff. Saying how his "Really smart bosses did something brilliant". His exact words were "How did WGN let them go?"

Well, because of his "Really smart bosses" getting the Cubs he might have to lose his job or take a pay cut to pay for this dumb ass deal. Irony.

Bernstein:

WSOX- Ratings hold pretty steady, everyone keeps their jobs.
WCUB- Ratings tank and everyone gets fired.

Which team is #ChicagosTeam and which is a tourist attraction with no real fans? You decide.

I thought it was understood that the Score's previous baseball broadcasting agreement was not good for the station.

It wasn't good. But I don't think they lost that much because they didn't pay that much for it. Yeah, more people will listen to Cubs games, but they still overpaid apparently.

What's worse? Buying a 200k house and losing 20k on the resale or buying a 5 million dollar house and losing 1 million on the resale? That sounds like the difference between the Sox and Cubs broadcasting rights at the SCORE.

One of the dumbest posts ever on this board, since the Score has yet to broadcast a single game and broadcasts of Cubs games on radio and TV were sharply up last season and have been superior to those of Sux broadcasts by far.

To compare a team that is judged by Las Vegas as the favorites to win the World Series, coming off a 97 win season with huge ratings to a losing team with fans that have no loyalty is stupid. Forgetting that the station has yet to broadcast a single game by which anything can be truly compared, keep in mind that the Cubs draw over a million more fans and with a great team, will draw interest for the full season. I detest the Score as a station. It was great when Jiggetts and North and Danny Mac were on the team. But the Cubs games are the only thing that will get me to turn that station on anymore. I'm guessing that is the reason they wanted those games....to draw in listeners who otherwise would never listen to the station and hope to get them to listen to the crapfest that is otherwise broadcast on the station. Mully and Hanley are actually okay, but on too early.

Here's Econ 101 for you:

Demand for flop-sox base ball (which was never high and was underpinned by a generation of suburban kids over-impressed by the great fluke of 2005) is plummeting as the Cubs actually become a first-class organization and south-side inbreds become more and more irrelevant and mis-managed. When demand falls faster than supply, price adjusts downwards. This is Jar-Jar Reinsdorf's club. When demand increases faster than supply, price increases. This is the Cubs.

Bring back Ozzie the Clown!

WGN couldn't wait to rid themselves of the Cubs. And the fact remains, nobody ever got fired for signing the White Sox.

They made a reasonable offer to the Cubs, Ricketts didn't take it.

The Score better be able to MONETIZE the Cubs or else all six CBS stations are going to be run by a laptop and a drinking bird. Tommy wanted to hang out with Lin Brehmer. Hope they can afford Lin Brehmer!
