In my view (which is admittedly unconventional), a "troll" is someone who makes a deliberate, concerted effort to undermine the communicative nature of a message board. "Characters" may or may not fall into this category, depending on their behavior. I think it is important to remember that we are all, to some extent at least, characters in what has become the developing narrative(s) of the CSFMB.
