In college, my roommate was a bit of a Superlative Steve -- everything was the best ever or the worst ever. He says, you have to see this movie Saving Private Ryan - best war movie ever. So in order to gauge the accuracy of this statement, I said, what makes it so good? He says the opening scene makes you feel like you are at the war. I said, really? He says, unbelievable. I said, is it so good that there is no chance that anyone won't be totally awestruck by the screen - if there's a group there and one guy farts, are they going to laugh or are they going to be too into the movie? He says no way they laugh.

I agree to go to the movie with him. The first scene is 15-20 minutes(?) long of a battle. And it is super realistic/grusome for the late 90s. About five minutes into it, I'm thinking if someone farted, there'd be no way I would laugh. But then I'm thinking some more, what if someone actually did laugh? The reaction from other people would be hysterical, especially if they didn't hear the fart. So the more I think of how funny it would be for someone to laugh during the scene, the harder it is for me to keep it together. It's like when you're in church and you know you can't laugh... well eventually, I start laughing and then I realize that everyone that looks at me laughing is thinking that I'm a real asshole, and how can anyone laugh at this realistic war on screen? After a few minutes, I regained my composure, but I have to confess that I definitely laughed and for a while during the opening battle.

I dislike most John Hughes movies, especially Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club, and Home Alone.

This. I've seen bits and pieces of some of them on AMC or whatever, but never watched more than about 5 minutes of them. Same for me with the 'Back to the Future' films.
