Like the books, they were designed to become more adult-oriented as they went along so the kids reading them as they grew up would have more age-appropriate material to the point that the final movies were adult films, well, not adult films.

A few of the libraries in my area continue to struggle with that awkward wording. "Adult Book Club on Tuesdays"

they've entered into "consistently watchable" when they're played all day long on ABC Family (Freeform, Freeform). But I rank them as such:

6. "Sorcerer's Stone" - slight forgiveness for trying to set the tone but it was competing with LOTR which was in a different league. definitely a kids movie, but the book was enjoyable as an adult. no reason the movie couldn't be.
5. "Chamber of Secrets" - a step in the right direction, and kenneth brannagh brings legitimacy to everything.
4. "Deathly Hallows Pt. 2" - essentially one big battle movie, points off for the blood (totally unnecessary) and Potter ultimately should have died. his kid looks like a little brat. best part was snape's memories.
3. "Order of the Phoenix" - fixed the context problem in "Goblet" and put the series back on track. umbridge was well cast.
2. "Prisoner of Azkaban" - the first movie that felt like it was starting to take itself seriously. Raised the stakes, had more powerful character growth.
1. "Half-Blood Prince" - this was the one that got it all completely right. enough wizardry to appease the fanboys and girls, and the most character development. the scenes between harry and dumbledore were outstanding and it felt like the HP version of "empire strikes back".
