The Chicago Cubs are taking a page out of the Chicago Blackhawks book and are on the verge of bringing back one of their legends to be part of the organization. According to Bruce Levine, the Cubs and Ryne Sandberg are finalizing a deal for the Hall of Fame second baseman to become an ambassador for the team.

Sandberg will appear at the Cubs Convention, which begins on Friday. The longtime Cubs second baseman and 1984 MVP, threw out the first pitch before game 3 of the NLDS at Wrigley Field between the Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. Now, he’ll have a bigger role with the team, although specifics aren’t known at this point.

After 15 seasons with the Cubs, Sandberg was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2005. His No. 23 is retired, hanging at Wrigley Field.

Sandberg wasn’t handed anything when he started his coaching career, beginning as a spring training instructor. In 2006, he was named the manager of the Class-A Peoria Chiefs, in the Midwest League. That team made it to the league’s championship game in Sandberg’s first season and then he was promoted to the Cubs’ Double-A team. His rise continued within the minor league system, promoted again in 2009 to be the manager for the Iowa Cubs.

Many fans thought Sandberg was the ideal choice to become the Cubs manager after Lou Pinella, but the job was given to Mike Quade. Several fans were mad that Sandberg wasn’t given a shot and he then left the Cubs to join the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

Sandberg was a hit once again and was named the 2011 Minor League Manager of the Year. In 2013, the Phillies made him their third base coach and he eventually took over as manager after Charlie Manual was fired. However, his time in Philadelphia didn’t go smoothly. Sandberg had an old team and eventually resigned in 2015, compiling a 119-159 record.

Now, he’s back and it’ll be great to see him be a part of the Cubs family once again.

Who else has held this position of Ambassador? Wasn't this Kerry Wood's gig for a number of years or does he have some kind of actual
front office position now? Thought that Dempster came back in this type of capacity as well. Is it just one year where you are a figure
head, press the flesh and be friendly to the fans?

Well, the article says he'll be "an ambassador", so from that I would presume there is or might be a plurality of ambassadors.

So his "role" with the team will be slightly more important than the dude who throws out the opening pitch? Yes, great to have Ryno back with the organization!

They need to make Kerry Wood the executive director of Cubs Care. I get the impression that the charitable stuff is what he really is interested in talking about these days.

They can put Ryno in charge of drawing the winning 50/50 number.

Remember when people wanted him to manage the Cubs? That was funny.

In time he could easily make his way back into a uniformed position as a coach under Madden if he would be willing to work in such a capacity. Especially if Martinez were to get a managing position of his own. Then Ryno might be installed as bench coach.

Do you really want him? Have you read how bad it was in Philadelphia?

He had a shitty team. They were injured and old / past their prime. He did a very good job in the Cubs minor league system and knows the game, so yes, I would welcome him as a coach.

See, the things about bronze statues is that you pay for it once and you're done. You don't have to have them speaking to the media or at fan conventions, throwing out first pitches, or having dolts like Elmhurst Steve sucking them off.

Ryne Sandberg was one of the best players of his era. A complete player, who won gold gloves, silver slugger awards, an MVP even. But it was what he did in the minor leagues as a manager that makes him an intriguing possibility for a spot on the coaching staff. Maybe he never manages again.....I think walking out on the Philly job was a big mistake. But he could be quite valuable as a coach on Madden's staff. I'm sure that will not happen unless an opening is created because a player like Martinez gets a managing job. Maybe it never happens and he just shakes hands and signs autographs, that's fine. Time to bring Sosa back to the team too. Walking out of the clubhouse early while a game was still going on was certainly a mistake, but time to let it go. The guy had 3 seasons with 60 or more homers and won an MVP. He almost certainly used HGH and/or steroids, but how did that harm the Cubs?....it didn't, in fact it helped them. Through better chemistry, he was a more productive player. That resulted in more homers, more wins and more tickets sold. Time to patch that thing up.
