The Bernstein Brief: WSCR At Cubs Convention Feels Surreal

(Getty Images)
187
By Dan Bernstein–
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) I guess I’ll finally believe it when I’m sitting there Friday afternoon, even after hearing all the on-air promos.

After nearly a quarter-century of being on the outside of Cubs business, 670 The Score is broadcasting live all weekend from the Sheraton in Chicago as part of the 31st annual Cubs Convention, part of assuming the new role of flagship station for the team’s games.

We’ll be right in the middle of it, amid the players, former players, coaches, executives, blue-clad autograph-seekers from Peoria, Ronnie Woo-Woo and some seriously high expectations for this year’s team.

The 97 wins and a year-ahead-of-schedule NLCS trip in 2015 will do that, and the additions of Jason Heyward, John Lackey and Ben Zobrist alongside a strong core provide reasonable hope that there are more busy Octobers to come. This isn’t the typical Cubs January, anymore, either — many of those of the past were more just mawkish sentimentality and self-aware wallowing than anything else, warding off winter with hope of spring.

It’s different now. This may be the best team in baseball and is undoubtedly positioned to be one of the elites for an extended period of time.

And WSCR is there. We have all the games. Unreal.

JORR is so right on this that he deserves a shoutout thread.

Its looking that way but the true test will be what happens after Theo

Could still make the case that this is more about a REALLY SMART GUY running a GREAT BUSINESS, more than the actual team

One more SP for depth would be nice but I can't complain.

Remember when the Cubs Convention was the ultimate object of their derision? Guess they'll have to move that to the Blackhawks Convention.

Less racist than Elmhurst Steve still leaves a lot of space to be racist.

There really is no point to that article. It could have or maybe should have been written by <generic cub fan caller>.

I'd just like to point out how much shit ZZ gets for his Bears shilling (more or less deserved I guess) ... however, at least he's publicly known to be a paid Bears employee. So, any time someone wants to 'Thursdays-at-5' Daniel on the matter, please do feel free.

For anyone who really thinks bernstein is- or ever was- a Sox fan, remember when the Sox won the World Series (2005!) and then they loaded up with Javy Vazquez and Thome and solidified even the back-ups with guys like Cintron? That team had just moved to the Score and it was clearly much more of a heavy favorite than this Cubs team. Why wasn't Sox Fan dan jizzing his pants like he is now? It's a really strange way for a supposed Sox fan to act, isn't it?

you're over-thinking this:

Getting the Sox was a big deal for the station. The Cubs are a bigger deal. It's higher ratings and more sales revenue. Bosses are happy, so Bernstein is too.

(well that's what he's hoping for, anyway. The result may not turn out that way.)

I believe you're the one over-thinking it. He's a Cub fan and thrilled he can now jizz all over his heroes without wasting time on the Sox (bad, just... bad).

Zimmerman was fired because of the Cubs deal.

Actually, this is probably the first time Bernsteinn will see Theo Epstein in person. So, yeah, that's why he's so excited.

At the first site of theo, this will be playing in Bernstein's mind...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oKUTOLSeMM

So he's pleasing the new boss. He wants the Cubs to do well because then the station does well.

Or a Comcast crew following Ozzie with a tv special "On the Road Home" or whatever that POS shit thing they had for Maddon last night was. Just for a little spice for Danny, Maddon from PA.

Said it well before, during and after.

Dont want Dan Bernstein to have anything to do with the Chicago Cubs...even just as a fan.

Once again, DB OFFICIALLY a Sox fan until further notice,

Sox nation will get 4 chances to rid themselves again of his stank during the Bernstein Cup. Split the 4 and you keep him!

What if the Sox hired a field manager with a law degree? It's a wonder he hates Tony La Russa as much as he does, considering.

Someone has to call or text this hypocrisy. It is too large for WYC.
