He may have been a prep or jock in high school but in his late teen years he was in and out of jail for three years, dealt drugs, and was essentially a member of the crips. (he denies he was a member)

If I remember correctly, Suge Knight told Howard Stern during an interview that he somehow bought an affiliation at Knight's urging in order to give him credibility.
