Yeah, I agree with that. North is of questionable character, at best, no question. But, that's up to the school.

I don't know North's motivation and don't care. If he wants to do this, maybe he's trying to be a better human being. Who knows?

If the school is willing to give him the opportunity and he assumes the responsibility and does it with respect, then there should be no issue. But, I don't blame North.

If you have an issue with the school about it, I don't blame you. That comes down to how much faith you have in that school's administration, that they would make the right decision regarding who they are putting in positions of authority.

Yes, I agree with you on this, I have less faith now then I did before. But just so you know, Rev. Smyth did this, others on the board and staff were not thrilled, but the powers that be, wouldnt really let our concerns snowball to a point were they would have to address it. As I said before, he will say or do something stupid, then Rev. Smyth will have to take action.

I just want to clarify, I am not busting North for taking money, if you can get it, take it. I will stand by my stance that he is doing this for pats on the back, because if he was just doing this just for the kids, he would not have said a word about, not one, but he couldnt wait to shoot off his mouth about it, that to me says he is doing this for ego.

I guess the question I would ask now is, if you have kids, would you want Mike North on thier team as a coach? Me, No. Mike has had his 3 strikes, he is just lucky that he works for people who dont seem to care about his comments and conduct.

Actually, after stating your connection to the school, I think you have every reason to make it your issue. After all, it comes out of the tuition checks that you cut and the last time I checked Chicago area Catholic school education wasn't cheap. The only thing I wonder is if he paid his way to the position by making generous donations benefitting the school or the athletic program.

Yea, but when the school takes 30-50 calls from parents and they dont return those calls, well, the answer is pretty clear. I thought about this and I will say that I am more upset with the school and Rev. Smyth, then I am with North. Bottom line, Smyth and North have a history, I knew that when Rev. Smyth came in last year and I will say the school has bigger issues now then the great Mike North, so that is were I try to focus my attention on when I am not here wasting time.

Kinda shocked is even taking the 5K. Assuming that is true.

GD, I agree that it is nothing to a guy making $2M, but then you gotta ask why take the money?

In a way it is like ND paid Mike North directly for a season long commercial.

While it is not a big deal to me, it seems like a deal with the devil , Ironic isn't it?

Don't blame him for looking for something to do, but if he wants to do something nice, you don't take even a $1 for volunteering your time.

Every year I spend 2-3 days with anywhere from 10-20 guys working for Habitat for Humanity and I promise you the labor hours and material donated is well over $5K and nobody takes a dime.

Coach stipends for catholic schools are typically quite small - in the 1000 range per sport. My guess is he's donating it back - he carries more in his wallet.

One of my friends is in his first year as the head track coach at a Catholic highschool. For both indoor and outdoor he will be paid 4200. I will be in my fifth year as an assistant at a public hs as a track coach. I will make about 4300. We also dont get paid for the indoor season. We do that for free. I roughly work 17 weeks between at about 30 hours a week (I coach both boys and girls and even though I only have to attend half th e meets for each, I try to make everyone for both because it is the right thing to do.). That 4300 will be about 2800 after taxes. So I make the equivilant of around 6 dollars an hour. The money is Ok but I could make more tutoring kids. I do it because I love to coach.

North is usually a douchebag but for this I disagree. Even if he is being paid more than the typical 2k stipiend for Catholic Assistant coachs a t most schools, If he is truly putting all the time the other coaches put in, I have no problem with what he is doing. He needs to watch how he talks on the radio though, some of the comments he has made could get the IHSA breathing down ND's neck.

Coaches can sometimes turn out to be away from home role models. So I guess this is a question of would you want North teaching your child? And why would anyone assume that because North makes 1.5 million he would be opposed to taking $5000!

On the IHSA website, you can find information about what requirements you must have in order to coach. Non-faculty coaches have state certified testing they must pass in order to become eligible to coach at a given school. According to the American Sport Education National Registry, Mike is a certified, non-faculty coach. He passed a state certified test, along with classes in first aid and coaching principles. This you can look up on their website by typing in his name. The website is www.asep.com.

My only question would be the alleged $5K he is getting as an assistant. High school head coaches-let alone assistant coaches-don't make that much for their sports. Their might be some exceptions based on the success of a program (Frank Lenti at Mt. Carmel?), which I don't see Notre Dame as having. If this type of stipend was common at ND I would venture to guess that staff would be lining up to at least offer to work as assistant coaches.

To those wondering why ND would take a chance with Mike, my only guess would be that its a free public relations move. I would guess that Fr. Smyth-with whom Mike seems to have a business relationship- saw this opportunity as a way of getting ND's name mentioned a lot during the season. I would agree with those who would question the choice of Mike considering his controversial statements.

A few questions:

1. When did North start coaching (do we have a month at least)?
2. If he was coaching prior to completing the classes and passing the certification - is this allowed under ASEP/IHSA rules?

Give the man a credit, he actually passed tests. The funniest past though, being somewhat familiar with the content, I have to let you guys know that the correct answers to test questions go completely against Mike's "pussification of this country" stance.

If you can take the test home I bet 100% he had someone take the test for him. Can the guy even read?

This is probably a stupid line of reasoning but here goes.
I don't listen to North much. usually only during Stone during the baseball season, so I don't have much to really draw on here. But, how much of the shit that North says is just a character? Are you confusing his Radio Personality of a Chicago Sports Fan Meatball with who North really is? Or is this guy tryly in real life this much of a douchebag? I don't think I buy it.

He's addressed the situation on the radio and it really is getting farther away from the point.

The answer to your question is that he was not on or allowed to be on the bench until he was certified.

I, like the vast majority of Chicago radio listeners, didn't hear this addressed on the radio.

So to go back to your comment, how was that "close to stalking?"

Some of you are applying your own morals and motivations to this situation. While you or I may not take the money because we feel it would be inappropriate, it doesn't mean that it is wrong. I know millionaires that grew up during the Depression that still watch every penny. They are very generous with time, donations, etc. But, they also make sure they get every penny that they are entitled too. It's just a different mentality but doesn't make it inherently wrong.

While I'd be surprised if North is taking the money or isn't just taking it and writing some kind of check back to the institution, I wouldn't think he's the worst person in the world just because he might be taking it. He might be the worst person for other reasons, but not that.

That's it!
Rev. Smyth is the "real" Bookie Priest, and coaching is how North pays off his gambling debt.

That concludes my annual post in the mike north section. Thanks.
