Im conflicted on Macklemore. I see him trying to do something with his music and he puts his heart and soul into it. More than you can say for many rappers.

ho is Macklemore?

Have you ever been to Whole Foods on a Saturday afternoon, when it’s giving out free samples? And there’s this superfit and ultra-earnest bearded man passing out surprisingly tasty and unfathomably expensive vegan-chorizo hash? Macklemore is that guy, if that guy were also a rapper.

But isn’t Macklemore very popular? A quick glance at his Wikipedia page shows he’s had numerous hit songs and has won multiple Grammys.

Oh yes, he is. All things considered, he’s probably one of the three or four most-popular rap artists working today. And yes, “Thrift Shop” and “Same Love” were megahits; The Heist—the debut studio album from him and Ryan Lewis—went platinum, and they won, like, all the awards in 2013 and 2014. They won so many awards that they ran out of music awards to give them. I think one of them might have even received an NFL MVP.

Macklemore is also, from all accounts, an extremely hardworking artist who had been grinding on the underground mixtape circuit since 2000. While he might have seemed like an overnight success, his career has been brewing for over a decade.

So why the shade?

Because despite Macklemore’s apparent earnestness, his work ethic, his success and even his apparent ally-dom, Macklemore is not very good at rapping. Is he a better rapper than you? Yes! A better rapper than me? Of course! In fact, if he actually were the vegan-chorizo hash guy at Whole Foods and he happened to also give you a mixtape, you’d think, “Oh, this vegan-chorizo hash guy at Whole Foods isn’t a terrible rapper! Who’d a thunk it?”

But when comparing him with other people who rap for a living and have reached a status where their music is considered radio and award worthy, he is not very good at it. Some would even argue that he is bad at it.

By “some,” you mean “you,” right?

Yes, I do. I wrote about this before in 2014, stating that Macklemore’s music largely fails to connect with us (black hip-hop fans) not because he’s white, but because we generally just don’t enjoy listening to it.

Deadspin’s Greg Howard also recently wrote on this dynamic: “There are white people who rap well and make good songs, and even if there’s grumbling, these rappers are all embraced, because there’s nothing wrong with talented musicians enjoying success. Macklemore isn’t embraced by rap fans because he is bad.”

Does Macklemore’s whiteness matter in this context? Yes, it does. A below-average white performer receiving critical and commercial lauds in a predominantly black space understandably rubs people the wrong way. But again, it’s less about his whiteness and more about his badness. It’s like if Matthew Dellavedova of the Cleveland Cavaliers—who is an earnest and hardworking and deserving NBA player—were named NBA MVP. People would be less mad that a white guy off the Cavs bench was named the NBA’s best player and more just confused and utterly flabbergasted that a white guy off the Cavs bench was named the NBA’s MVP.


Basically, the problem with Macklemore isn’t that he’s white. It’s that he’s white and makes bad music, and people just prefer that he would stop doing that.

Well, doesn’t his new song, the aptly titled “White Privilege II,” address this? He’s aware that he benefits from being a white man in the rap industry, and he made an entire freakin’ song about it. Why is this still rubbing you the wrong way? Is this what a true ally would do?

Well, Macklemore might be self-aware that he’s white and benefits from privilege. But he apparently is not self-aware enough to be aware that people (rap fans) want him to stop making rap music. Because, if he were, he wouldn’t have made “White Privilege II” a nine-minute-long song. This is like Hardee’s saying, “Yes, we know our food is terrible. And we’d like to acknowledge that by inviting you to our new Hardee’s all-you-can-eat buffet!”

My favorite rappers are, in some order, Kanye West, Ghostface, Jay Z, the GZA and Big L. The only way I’d listen to a nine-minute-long song featuring each of them is if the last four minutes of said song were nothing but detailed instructions for me to find a treasure chest with a million dollars in it. “White Privilege II” is basically a think piece read aloud.

Also, while Macklemore does appear to be earnest, I do harbor some suspicion about his sincerity. It feels, for lack of a better term, performative. Like a person tweeting a selfie of themselves tweeting a sad-face emoji instead of actually just being sad. Which Macklemore has a history of doing.

No, the performative earnestness. For instance, when The Heist won best rap album at the Grammys—an award many believed should have gone to Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City—instead of just privately texting Kendrick to express that he believed Kendrick truly deserved the Grammy, he privately texted Kendrick to express that he believed Kendrick truly deserved the Grammy ... and then created a post on his Instagram page showing everyone that he privately texted Kendrick.

So forgive me if I’m still somewhat cynical when this same guy basically says, “Hey, I’m a white guy rapping who benefits from being a white guy rapping, and I’ve made a song about being a white guy rapping benefiting from being a white guy rapping, and I know I’ll receive lots and lots of praise and props and play for being a white guy rapping about benefiting from being a white guy rapping.”

You are forgiven.

To put it really simply, the song is typical SJWism. It's not actually about the serious issues, it's about how those issues make him feel. The song is about Macklemore. There's nothing wrong with that. But it's not as if he's doing "God's work" with this pop song. Problematic.

MEEK MILL SAYS HE WAS TIPPED OFF BY DRAKE'S GHOSTWRITER ON SUMMER SIXTEEN

Drake’s “Summer Sixteen” might have been the most talked-about release on Saturday (Jan. 30), but Meek Mill’s rapid response was easily a close second. Dropping the second installment of his 4/4 series, the MMG rapper offered another set of bars aimed at Drizzy with “War Pain.” As listeners hit play on Meek’s retort, social media began to speculate whether or not there was a mole in the OVO camp, as “War Pain” made a direct reference to a line in “Summer Sixteen.”

Drake’s braggadocio reached eyebrow-raising heights on his new single with lines such as, “I used to want to be on Roc-A-Fella, then I turned into Jay.” On Meek’s “War Pain” response, he addressed Drake’s claim directly: “You ain’t writin’, n****, we caught ya / Can’t erase that shit and you claiming you Hov now? / Why you state that shit?” Appearing more like a conspiracy than a coincidence, more foul play was suspected when both rappers mentioned a night at the Four Seasons in Toronto, with Drake stating, “I let the diss record drop, you was staying right below me, n***a,” and Meek setting the stage with: “Location, Toronto, status – five star hotel, Four Seasons. Them chumps right upstairs.”

As commentary flooded in that something in the water might not be clean, Meek Mill took to Instagram to respond. Sharing a photo of himself with an obnoxious grin, he wrote the caption, “The ghost writer told me!”

All side eyes now point to Quentin Miller, who was revealed to have helped Drake pen tracks such as “10 Bands,” “Know Yourself,” “Used To” and R.I.C.O.” Peep Meek Mill’s joke below:

Meek Mill Finally Beats Drake with Vicious Diss Track ‘War Pain’

The Philly rapper released a response to Drake’s ‘Summer Sixteen’ mere hours after its release, claiming that ghostwriter Quentin Miller clued him in on the track.

On Saturday evening, Drake released new song “Summer Sixteen”—the debut track off his upcoming album Views From the 6. In it, the Toronto MC took even more shots at rival Meek Mill, who’d taken the biggest L since the infamous Ja Rule/50 Cent feud in the early aughts.
“I let the diss record drop, you were standing right below me, nigga / We must have played it a hundred times, you was going to bed / Why would I put on a vest I expect you to aim for the head / I coulda killed you the first time / You don’t have to try and say it louder nigga, trust me heard you the first time,” Drake raps.
Here, Drake is insinuating that he was staying in the hotel room above Meek Mill when his diss track “Back to Back” dropped, taunting Meek by playing it on repeat.
Well, hours after “Summer Sixteen” dropped on Beats 1’s OVO Sound Radio, Meek Mill posted a response, “War Pain,” to his SoundCloud. The quick response time is, according to Meek’s Instagram, because “the ghost writer told me”—in other words, that Quentin Miller, the man Meek accused of being Drake’s ghostwriter on a number of tracks that kicked off their whole summer skirmish, had informed Meek of “Summer Sixteen’s” lyrics prior to its unveiling. It’s a boss move by Meek, and a far cry from this past summer when it took him an entire week to respond to the Drake disses “Charged Up” and “Back to Back,” only to come up limp.

“War Pain” opens by setting the scene: Meek is holed up in The Four Seasons Toronto “countin’ five hundred thousand cash” while girlfriend Nicki Minaj is in the bedroom sleeping. Meanwhile, Drake and his crew are “right upstairs, they know not to come up here playin’ no real niggas.” So Meek is confirming the portion of “Summer Sixteen” alleging that Drake and his boys were in the room above him when “Back to Back” came out, just not the trolling part.

Later on in the song, Meek threatens to rob Drake and raps, “With your lil memes, I be with the real queen”—this being Queen Nicki. He then references the portion of “Summer Sixteen” that inexplicably invoked Jay Z, with Drake rapping, “I used to wanna be on Roc-A-Fella then I turned into Jay.”
“See an OVO chain, probably take that shit / Said dreamin’ wasn’t enough, we had to chase that shit / You ain’t write it nigga, we caught ya, can’t erase that shit / And you claimin’ you HOV now? Why you state that shit?” raps Meek.

He continues, “Man, I hate that shit, niggas be talkin’ out they face / But soon as you body somethin’ they be singin’ like they Drake / Wait, niggas dancin’ like they fruitcakes / Hotline Bling, don’t get no bing up in this new Wraith / Pull up the plug, swap that bag with the suitcase.”

Everyone—present company included—had counted Meek out, but between this and his recent “Im Da Plug Freestyle,” it seems Philly’s finest has finally channeled his inner Adonis Creed, lacing up the gloves and hopping in the ring with Drizzy.

Meek closes things out on “War Pain” by referencing Drake's allegedy robbery in his native city of Toronto.

“DC4 on the way, that’s nigga’s due date / Robbed you in your city and you told / Tory from the 6, you hatin’ on him, Lord knows / Culture vulture, now it’s time to pay the tolls,” spits Meek.

Jay Electronica rips 50cent and calks Kendrick Lamar his son...



Jay Electronica refuses to drop an album, but he just dropped a bomb of a video on the Internet, where he oddly threatens bodily harm to 50 Cent.

The New Orleans rapper recently conducted a Periscope session with fans where he touched on a number of topics and random ramblings, and gave some interesting answers. Concerning fellow “Control” verse rapper Kendrick Lamar, Elec doesn’t seem convinced of his critical acclaim.

“Look, I like the one Kendrick song with Gunplay, “Cartoons and Cereal,” but other than that we don’t know what nigga talking about.” He later added to the topic after one of his fans had some harsh words for Cornrow Kenny. “Don’t say fuck Kendrick, that’s still our brother.” Later in the video (12:40), he brings up Lamar again adding, “Kendrick is my son, Kendrick is my baby, Kendrick wishes he could be me.”

But the even more head-turning revelation was his thoughts and threats to Fif. “50 Cent at once, he was a good rapper,” Electronica notes at the 12:00 mark. “Right now he got the potential to be a rapper but he’s on some sucker shit…and we will slap 50 Cent’s eyeballs loose out his scalp.”

Wow. Did we miss something? Someone who surely wont miss this jab is 50 Cent who bites his tongue for no one. Already embroiled in a new beef with Meek Mill that sort of kind of popped up out of nowhere, we are sure the Queens MC will have no problem adding this squabble to the docket. Stay tuned.

Ghostface has responded to Martin Skreli




The absurd saga of Martin Shkreli and Ghostface Killah has gone somewhere beyond ridiculous into a new twilight zone of insanity. After the Wu-Tang rapper and the parasitic pharmaceutical CEO spent a few days exchanging harsh words online after Shkreli paid $2 million for the sole copy of the Wu-Tang Clan’s Once Upon A Time In Shaolin. Things reached new levels of insanity a couple of weeks ago when Shkreli got some goons together to threaten Ghostface, telling Ghost to keep quiet. Ghost did not keep quiet.

In a new 12-minute video, Ghost basically says everything anyone needs to say about Martin Shkreli. On his masked goons: “You a fake-ass supervillain.” On the idea that Ghost is washed-up: “You done bought a washed-up rapper’s album for $2 million. Who washed up now?” On Shkreli’s threat to erase Ghost from the Wu-Tang album: “Don’t think, for nothing, that you could ever erase me from history, bruh. I am history.” On Shkreli’s money: “I don’t care how much money you got because money don’t make you a man, bruh.” And most importantly, on the Daraprim price hike: “You don’t do that to the people, man.”

Ghost also brings in his own goons: His sister, his mother, and some other lady to shame Shkreli. Ghost’s sister cries and shows her brain-surgery scar. It gets intense. Watch it below.


Ghost, of course, won this little battle long before it started, since he made Ironman and Shkreli is a force for evil in the universe. But now he won it even more.

DMX Reportedly Overdosed, Found Unconscious In Yonkers Hotel

This is no bueno.

It’s no secret that DMX has battled drug addiction for some time now, and according to new reports, the Yonkers, New York rapper suffered an overdose late last night.

TMZ reports:

Yonkers cops responded to a call about an unconscious male at a Ramada Inn just after 6 PM. We’re told when cops arrived DMX was on the ground in the parking lot next to a parked car. Cops quickly determined he was lifeless, not breathing with no pulse and immediately began CPR.

After a minute of CPR X’s pulse came back.

A witness on scene told cops DMX had ingested some sort of powder before lapsing into unconsciousness. Cops gave him Narcan, an antidote to narcotic ODs. DMX became “semi-conscious” and was taken to the hospital.

Initially, DMX’s camp reported the It’s Dark & Hell Is Hot rapper suffered a massive asthma attack, but cops maintain that it was an overdose.

DMX is set to hit the festival circuit this spring; we wish him a full and speedy recovery.

In the ever-growing mystery of Kanye West and the seventh album title, a clue has been provided by West himself, though it has done little to clear up speculation as to what the album is actually called. Early Tuesday morning (Feb. 9), Kanye tweeted out a photo from the studio, writing, “@studio /final verses /new album title T.L.O.P.” He followed up the cryptic anagram with a small bit of explanation. “That’s the new album,” he wrote, “anybody who can figure out the title gets tickets to Season 3 and free Yeezys.” As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, West had not crowned anybody a winner, though plenty had offered a guess as to the album’s new title could be.

album sounds pretty great
like that it's mostly straighforward beats and nothing too elaborate
scouring the web to find something but i'm amazed it's not anywhere. must be doing a good job keeping it under lock & key

the Taylor Swift stuff is great. too bad Keeping score isn't here

I very much enjoyed the first 5 tracks. Chance's verse was fire.
