While true, the only affect the Senate should have in practicality is to force Obama to pick a jurist who is viewed as somewhat moderate. If they fight him tooth and nail in a purely political fashion then Obama can certainly make the GOP look bad during the process. Almost a year without a nominee (longer than that in truth given that even a Republican president would have to get his guy through) would be subject to ridicule. Think about the 1st case that splits 4-4. Maybe several. Even worse if they shoot down multiple nominees and then lose the presidential election.

In an email sent out by the Democratic National Committee, supporters are asked to chipping in some money for the coming Supreme Court nomination fight.
