Is it really any worse than caring about who the next host of the midday show is going to be? Is it worse than caring about the next host even as the current host has little chance of ever being fired?

I guess he is channeling his inner Nick Irvin. Too bad his best player wasn't quoted as saying if he was in charge he wouldn't of pulled his team off the court.

Theatrics overshadow hoops in City win

By MICHAEL RAINES Staff Writer | 0 comments

MICHIGAN CITY – After a traveling violation was called against his team with three minutes and 10 seconds to go in the first half, Chicago Curie coach Michael Oliver called a timeout and threatened to leave.

He told Michigan City coach John Boyd and he told athletic director Craig Shaman and he told the referees. After the timeout but before play resumed, Oliver was whistled for a technical foul.

He pulled his team off the floor. The Condors gathered their belongs from the bench area and walked across the court to the locker room as Dante Combs hit two free throws to make the score 21-18 in favor of Michigan City.

At that point, the officials declared the game over, placed the ball on the scorer's table and headed to their dressing room. Michigan City went into its locker room with a win by forfeit.

Then Curie returned to the gym.

Apparently prepared to make peace, the team was hoping to continue the game. But the referees told Shaman they would not resume play after the game had been declared over. Neither the officials nor the Wolves returned to the court.

“That's the first time anyone has ever Bobby Knight'd me,” Boyd said. “I'm a seasoned coach, so I've seen a lot of different things. I just go by the rules. You walk your team off and the referees call the game, that's the end of the game. We get a win.”

The Wolves had trailed much of the first quarter before taking the lead on a late Combs 3-pointer. The score was back-and-forth to start the second quarter and Michigan City held a brief lead before the technical, subsequent free throws and end of the contest.

Michigan City was playing without ShanQuan Hemphill, who was injured in Friday's loss at Valparaiso.

“I thought we played with a lot of energy,” Boyd said. “I thought [Saturday], against the No. 2-ranked team in Chicago, we came out and responded with a lot of energy.

“I thought it was a good contest. I have no idea what was transpiring, but the referees decided, once he walked his team off, to call the game. So we get out of here with a win. You don't know which way it was going to go if we play it all the way out.”

Combs unofficially led the Wolves (5-6) with 10 points. He also had two rebounds and a blocked shot.

Boyd is hoping the junior can find his stride and help lead the team in Hemphill's absence.

“I think he's starting to round into form, and that bodes will for us,” Boyd said. “I think he's starting to gain a lot of confidence, starting to understand his role with the team.”

The Wolves won't have much time to process Saturday's incident. Michigan City returns to action with four road games next week: against Chicago Hope in the Martin Luther King Classic on Monday, at Munster on Tuesday, at La Porte on Friday and at South Bend Clay on Jan. 23.

“We get one day off and then we're back at it,” Boyd said. “It doesn't stop for us. We're just going to be ready to play.”

We ( ) play Simeon on Sunday for the CPS title.

As a long time alum, I didn't ever see this coming

It was a good game. Came down to the last play. Both games last night were decided on the final play. Helluva way to have to make it to the championship.

The new coach cleaned house and brought a bunch if transfers in the last two seasons. They are going the Hyde Park route from a few years ago.

Ltg,

Why did so many kids transfer out of Whitney Young this season?

The old coach had a number of transfers on his team also. They just were not very good and he didn't do a good job of coaching them to be honest.

Kids are leaving because Whitney Young tends to stockpile talent and Slaughter isn't really a good coach. His kids come in with big reputations and they don't really develop. He came up through the AAU circuit and he tends to coach that way. He always has some talent but if it is not superior he can't win.

He had kids splitting time this year and some parents were not in favor that either.

Any parent who transfers his child out of Whitney Young in order to find a better basketball situation for that child should be brought up on neglect charges.

Not as bad as it first appears Dolphin. Two of the kids transferred to Stephenson. One Transferred to Kenwood. The other Transferred to Riverside-Brookfield. They are not really slumming it once they leave. It's difficult for me to advocate for kids transferring, but the decision to do it is influenced by the cost of college tuition in some cases.

I went to the Evanston Supersectional at McGaw last night. Notre Dame and Curie. A really good game. Ultimately Notre Dame couldn't stop Gage going to the hoop. And this kid, Landers Nolley the Second shot the fuckin' lights out. Still ND had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer but Jemearil Wilson threw the ball out of bounds to end it. I think it's gonna be Simeon vs. Curie in the 4A final.

I can't believe Lincoln-Way West beat both Hillcrest then Morgan Park to make the 3a semis. Saw all three teams play this year. My guess is Morgan Park got over confident.

Sources say Lincoln-Way West brought 13 fan buses. The entire school (aside from 150 kids) is at the game.

I've got LW West/Althoff and Simeon/Currie Finals
