BABIP, or batting average on balls in play, was originally designed to measure a pitcher's ability to prevent hits on balls in play. Today it's widely used to evaluate both pitchers and hitters, and it's a calculation of a hitter's batting average -- or pitcher's batting average allowed -- on batted balls put into the field of play. That means walks and strikeouts don't count; those aren't batted balls. Nor do home runs; those don't land within the field of play.

It's not really serving anything to use it for a batter. I've heard bernstein misuse it the same way it was misued in this thread, as an expectation that a particular batter's BABIP should regress back to the .300 norm. But that .300 norm is for all pitchers. Not for individual batters. That's how McCracken discovered this. He noticed that the BABIP of pitchers could swing wildly season to season but over enough time always came out around .300. But a guy who regularly drives balls into the gaps is going to maintain a higher BABIP and there is no reason to expect the regression. We may as well just look at his batting average. In fact, it tells us more about the hitter since there might be an actual reason why the batter's strikeout rate is up or down.

xBABIP is a thing too...Interesting stuff about Bryant and that he is likely going to regress. Also lists Russell and Soler as regression candidates...

I didn't read that article you linked but I would guess his flyball rates are the reason for Bryant's expected regression. But that's not something I'd bet on. I could easily see Bryant pounding more balls where they ain't and he's also fast enough to beat out stuff on the infield.

if he'd only regress 17 pts he'd be a Saladino and if he could regress 18 points he'd be Jimmy Rollins

so he has something to shoot for

damned with your own evidence

SS was going to be a weak hole for the Sox no matter what they did...and yet Addison Russell is a comparable

how many MLB SS have a better than .242 13 hr ?

so who impresses you at SS ?

Addison Russell is arguably going to be the best middle infield glove in all of baseball. He can play 2nd or SS equally well. Any sort of offense at all and he's going to be making other teams drool for the next decade.

Not trolling

I don't think he's better than Simmons. But he'll be pretty good until he's replaced by Torres.

GREAT bat ... heck he went 1-1 in 2012 draft...BUT his dWAR was only 0.6

i'd take Simmons (70) and Russell's (65) glove over CC (60 glove) .....

I'm not interested in chopping players in half and asking which half is better. I'd rather have Correa than Simmons and Russell.

JORR: Simmons will be better

Despite all the statements to the contrary in the last year, playing 2B is not difficult nor is it a difficult transition from playing SS.

Where did I say that Russell was the best def inf in baseball.... I know you "subbies" have a reading deficiency .... I said Russell was TOP 4 ... want the list

1. Simmons
2. Crawford
3. Ahmed
4. Russell

Better bat Correa
Better glove Simmons
best combination Russell

Inquis: FF can you read?
FF: (crickets)

You're right. I confused you and GoldenJet since you both have terrible opinions and seemingly know less about baseball than even I do. Taking Russell over Correa is just plain dumb.

I'd like to think most baseball fans would take Correa. He is silly talented. Addy is going to be fine...but I don't think many shortstops will stack up well to Correa over the next decade. There isn't a player on the Cubs (besides Rizzo maybe) that I wouldn't trade straight up for Correa.

Correa is a beast, his future is Tulowitzki.. Addy has a bright future but no Tulo bright.

Knowing less than you .... doubtful... if you want terrible opinions just read some of the stuff "The Illuminati" post on here.... most of what I post are based on stats... unlike the shoot from the lip style employed by you and your fellow "subbies"

do you remember the GREAT SS of the mid 90's .... let me remind you.... Jeter, A-Rod, Nomar, this crop is close .... Correa Lindor, Russell, and Seager....

This is from a year ago: http://nypost.com/2015/03/18/these-4-yo ... jeter-era/

Sherman doesn't mention Simmons probably because of his bat.... so even if you add him...what does that make Russell...5th.... that is still prety impressive..... but I know you guys KNOW IT ALL.

Correa is MVP every year type stuff...MAYBE!

Because we all know just because a player looks really good one year, he could be terrible the next year, which means no player can ever be called great! Until they are done with their careers!

It's amusing that you think you are insulting someone here. Yes, Sox fans don't need to look at an Excel spreadsheet to have a baseball conversation.
